    it happens lol

I'm practically convinced that xp debt isn't the way to go. As much as it would help players who want to play slower, I don't want the system to do it at the cost of someone else's game experience.

I know both sides. During my first and 2nd playthrough, I felt like the game was going to quickly (didn't have a guild back then. Ha.). Now it feels like forever grinding up.

Hollow knight is a fabulous game, one of my favourites that I’ve played thus far, and I’m barely three hours into it.
The death penalty is pretty much my only issue with it. I love the rest of the game, but don’t see why it’s necessary or even useful.

Games like Hollow Knight expect this kind of playstyle from you where you need to not get hit as much as possible, ideally not at all. It feels like it's made to be challenging and dangerous, but equally wondrous. The difficulty adds to the experience in a way that it makes you appreciate the calm atmosphere that rarely comes by you, and atmosphere really matters to Hollow Knight.

uh in my opinion at least

But yeah it feels unfair to compare Wynncraft with Hollow Knight, especially if Wynncraft isn't going for the same target audience as Hollow Knight's.

Yeah ok no the atmosphere argument is a good one - Hollow Knight would feel much more . . . jovial without a death penalty; it’s like Darkest Dungeon or something
For Wynncraft, this is not the case, obviously.

I'm still so bummed that Silksong is still not out yet. I know it's not good to rush and it literally got announced at the worst possible time (right before covid), but it's already been over 4 years now.

I guess that's just par for the course given how I've been here for almost a decade now...

Xbox said it was supposed to be released in June of this year, so after that I haven’t heard of an exact release date.

My main problem with loss of xp is that it either really affects the player or doesn't affect them whatsoever. If the xp penalty only affects xp gained from killing mobs (Which it does as far as I can tell), then if someone gaining xp by grinding dies, they effectively can't progress for a couple of hours or however long it takes to pay off the debt. On the other hand, if someone trying to level up by literally any other means dies, then they are completely unaffected, meaning that an xp penalty only hurts players who are grinding xp. This effectively locks out one way of playing the game, which shouldn't really happen.

Furthermore, death penalties in general don't really serve any purpose. The inconvenience of death (Losing keys/runes and having to walk back) already makes death an undesirable concept, so players are already motivated not to die. This means that any other punishment has no effect on the player except to make dying in-game feel worse, which only serves to reduce the quality of the game.

uh no actually. I actually imagine that players would pay off their debt by doing a dungeon or a raid. those give a lot of xp and good gear. it can also teach them how to fight or do parkour or puzzles etc

I suggest you read up on the recent replies

There's also Boss Altars, which is the best way to get gear and fighting experience imo. The bosses are unique in their own ways, and getting good gear out of them is almost guaranteed.

Unfortunately they don't give a lot of xp on death, if at all. But maybe that just means they're the best place to grind for good items and get fighting experience without plunging you to more high-level content as a result.

I think of every death punishment system through the lens of my first paythrough, getting stuck on Bob's Reincarnation for Jumla knows how long and dying over and over. If I had had to grind or do a dungeon every time I died in there, or had to do one for every time I died in there, I would have quit, no questions asked. If I had to grind for every time I died trying to kill Qira to see if my build was strong enough or I was good enough *now*, I would have quit the game. If every time I tried to get through a new floor of Tower of Ascension I also had to do a dungeon or two, or if Legendary Island cost my a trip through the forgery if I failed or if the dungeon I was doing to make up for another death lagged or if I got stuck in the terrain or if for some reason the NoG boss one shot me despite having 23k hp and max defense (pssst, that glitch still happens, plz fix) or if wandered into the wrong area when I was level 15 because I wanted to explore this big beautiful new open world and the snow area looked cool - do you think having to grind after all of those would be enjoyable?

    Fair enough

Which replies do you mean? I can't see anything except the hollow knight stuff (Which is for a different game and irrelevant to my point) that contradicts what I've said. Granted there's like 3 pages so I might have missed something.

The ones with Mardeknius. She got a really good point with xp debt, why it's pretty good but still not ideal, and I agreed with another reply.

That would just make large stretches of the game incredibly boring and probably make people quit more than soul points would. Once you've completed all the quests for a region of the game not having any more quests to level up with makes leveling really hard and slow. And unlike with soul points this is a problem that doesn't go away by itself, you have to be present and active while going through your monotonous punishment
    But that's fun
