Death Messages (really Small Suggestion)

This is a really small suggestion but this death message https://prnt.sc/qj66j7. It says [Player] met his demise. But it should be [Player] met their demise, because we don't know what their gender is.

 

Actually, now that I think about it, is there ever a reference to the player's gender?
It would probably be a mistake, as I'm pretty sure they did that on purpose (only referring to you as adventurer, warrior or whatever) but I am wondering

Come to think of it, the Vault Guard refers to the player as "Ragni Man" in Kingdom of Sand. That should probably be fixed.

 

Wait actually yeah cause by you having to dress up as a girl makes therefore implies you are not such.

 

Or just implement an iteration of this somewhere in the game (and probably add a toggle command)

If dialogue can be altered based on what class you choose, then it can too be changed based on one stat like this

 

I might be misinterpreting your post, but no, there's no political agenda. Quest dialogues and other in-game text have been receiving changes for a long time to make pronouns neutral and I if it's possible I see no reason not to change it. Besides, the "crossdressing as a game mechanic" trope has been done to death and is neither interesting nor funny.

 

Royal Trials specifically doesn't identify the player's gender - read the dialogue again and you'll see.

 

Sorry to be an English hound, but this isn't correct grammar. "Their" implies multiple people have died, what you would prefer to use is "his or her". I personally just use "his" instead of "his or her", simply since it is the old-fashioned way of referring to a person whose gender is not specified. Same thing with the word "man" in words such as "everyman", "chairman", "policeman", even just the general use of the word "man" in literature.

My solution is just to change the death messaging system entirely, so it specifies how the player died/what the player was killed by instead of the player just "meeting his/their/his or her demise".

Edit: There was a thread about this in the past, and it ended up getting shut down due to a mini flame war starting. I understand your concern, and I would implore you and others to treat this issue with some caution, as some people can be very sensitive. Judging from the current replies, it seems that people are treating it well, which is good to see.

 

While this is true, the way the quest explains it is lazy and unbelievable.

The "singular they" has existed for centuries and is well ingrained in common speech. I'd say it's perfectly reasonable to use "they" as a genderless pronoun.

while I don't mind how the player is referred to at all, I don't think it's a worthy use of time to go around hunting down every piece of dialogue to change single words just to make sure the players gender is never mentioned. making sure it's not in updated content is fine, but what's the point of sucking out such a small detail from a super small handful of text when the ct could spend their time actually creating new things or even just living their lives

Yes, there are several and it's definitely not unintentional. The player is assumed to be all sorts of things throughout various quests, discoveries, etc.

 

I'm fairly certain this has more to do with role-playing then politics...

since i've learned french, I sometimes use the masculine term when the gender is unknown.

she ----> always female

 

I personally don't care, but in the worst case scenario you can use "it", which is truly neutral
