Considering that Wynncraft is a server on Minecraft, and how minecraft looks, I don't think anyone's going to either take it too seriously or really get disturbed by anything

Its not about being a serial killer. Its about the scars that it left in your mind and the often horrific illusions and dreams. Even if you dont realize it, there were things that have been caused by these horror movies when you were younger

    This is a good observation.
Although I do not think it was a definite decision we made, definitely we have been shifting the type of content we put out. When wynncraft began is was all quite jovial and fun, and we've definitely delved into some deeper issues now. Here's why I think this is the case.
Although an argument could be made that it's just spawned from a rotation of control in the content team, and that now because we have maniacs like @Tantibus in control we get darker themes, I do not think that's really all of it. I think as we've developed and grown as a server we've started taking ourselves more seriously. As is probably self-evident, early in the server's life the significance and depth of the lore was taken quite lightheartedly- look, the first real main character was named "Bob"- but as wynncraft grew and interest in the backstory really developed I think our interest in developing something with substance really grew with it.
Most important, we believe, is teaching real lessons as well: stories of corruption, oppression, and struggle to survive. It's very easy in an RPG to make the goal to kill the one bad guy at the end- in our case that was the Corrupter of Worlds- who for some unknown reason is just intent on killing everything, and so we feel no issue in just taking him down. But the truth is, in reality, stories are never so one-sided, so monochromatic. Everyone has a reason for what they do, and not every bad guy is some alien monster. Sometimes even, you are he bad guy.
Although the Hallowynn quest line isn't necessarily in the vein of teaching people a real lesson, I think that's along with us not wanting to water down what we give you. If we're going to make a scary quest, we'll make it scary. If we're going to make a bad guy now, we'll make it a real bad guy.

So in short, I think this really happened because we wanted to take this opportunity to tell real lessons and real stories, and unless our audience just stops listening, we'll keep telling them.

That's just kids gaming in general. I wasnt exposed to some of these graphic games until I was older, but that's because my dad was a big gamer, and used to read reviews and knows a lot about gaming, so games like GTA used to be on his "No" list for me. Not all parents are like that, though. Some don't read reviews and just look at the back of the game case. That's when kids begin playing games they shouldn't, which then they tell their friends about the game, and then they want it, and the cycle continues.

To add onto this, I don't think this shift in storytelling will necessarily mean a lot more blood and gore. Sure, there might be some instances (Hallowynn) where that was a component in its story but adding blood and disturbing stuff won't automatically make your story "mature". We're not going to turn the entire game into a horror movie, or one of those generic zombie slashers where apparently more blood = more enjoyment. However, quests like Hallowynn do show an example of how we're willing to branch out in terms of the types of storytelling. For example, Hallowynn's entire story is mostly shown to you, with very few lines of dialogue. To fit this, we had to make the "explanation" in the cutscene match that type of storytelling, by cutting down on dialogue (though I'm rather proud of the dialogue I added at the end of it). We can tell our story in a lot of different ways, and not just in text.

But the point I'm trying to make here is that we don't need to have horror or blood or whatever to tell a good story. While it seems to be a running theme, what with Memory Paranoia, and Hallowynn, you can also see that we don't need to get an M rating just to tell our stories right: Look at WynnExcavation, and ???, and all of the other crazy conspiracy theories about almost every quest in the game. I'm really glad that we've gotten to the point where some people are as equally invested into the story as they are into the game, it means we've been doing a lot better at selling our atmosphere and immersion. And I hope we can tell you guys some more amazing stories in the future, but only time will tell.

Whew, that was a lot of ranting about telling stories. Okay now I'm gonna go back to making dead memes.
