Why Do People Hate Sword Art Online?

I recommend starting from something a bit less mainstream and stronger like shiki and ajin

 

What’s the premise?

 

Okay so here are my two cents, given I'll be repeating what other people said since this has gotten to page three. My knowledge comes from reluctantly watching every series in the standard show. No movies cause those are just stage 4 capitalism acting out.

So first off, we've got the first 12/13 episodes. Episode one is forgivably mediocre, and any logical missteps and poor writing can be forgiven, as is dictated by the rule of threes. In fact, upon first watching episode one, I was so distracted by the gorgeous music and animation that I didn't realize I had just shortened my lifespan by 23 minutes.

Now right when you finish episode one, you'll start developing a sizable red lump. That is the prostate cancer you'll be getting when you finish episode two. So now, we get to Sword Art Online's original sin; The forbidden fruit; It's Achilles heel; Time skips. Now, the director probably thought, "Hey Manga-Author-San, you made your main character stupidly powerful, and I can't justify this, and cover your entire first story arc in 12 episodes. What should I do?" So stage 4 capitalism stepped in, and demanded time skips. Now, a time skip isn't inherently bad. If executed properly they can be fantastic. However, when you have one. Every single episode, there are very serious things that can happen, the worst of which SAO adores. This second sin is glossing over information. Primarily, between episodes one and two, they just casually throw in that 10% of the game's playerbase died in a month. That's a major fucking event. -10 points to gryffindor. Actually, the only people who could get into hogwarts are the animators and the lead vocalist.

Season one culminated in a mass genocide being brushed over by the game creator being like "cancer bruv" and overpowered dickbag mcgee not fucking his egirl cause the game I rated T, so I can only assume they removed genitalia. Oh wait, they had a sexy scene in which Asuna, main egirl is in her undergarments that look suspiciously like some lingerie from an entirely different type of film. Oh and he has a harem complete with lolis, and a black guy. Did I mention just how shit of a character black-friend is? That's all he amounts to. Black-friend. That's more degrading then the "I am mad scientist" scene in Steins-Gate. Plus, the untapped homoerotic undertones between black-friend and bro-friend are never explored.

Now onto season 2. HAHA YOU EXPECTED HAREM TO STAY INGAME. NOW WE'VE GOT THE DIRECTOR IMPLYING HIS SISTER WANTS TO START THE HAPSBURG DYNASTY 2: YOUR FATHER DOESN'T SPEAK TO YOU CUZ HES BUSY PLAYIG VIDEO GAMES BOOGALOO. Oh and we have a dude rape someone. Lots of very not okay sexual themes are normalized in this season. Do not watch this season. It is the culmination of all things improper. Season three is just bad... it's just season one with guns and a tournament arc.

If you want a better version of this anime, the Chinese- yes, a real Chinese cartoon- made this show called Qing Gao Shou or something like that, and it's SAO but okay. A real anime that's better but is the same theme is Log Horizon. Go check it out. Is good.

Sao season one gets a 5/10, season 2 2/10, and 3 gets a... 3/10.

 

shiki is about a small village in the mountains that a new family moves into (they are vampires), they just want to live their lives but it clashes with the village life (cause it turns everyone into vampires) so the village people go on a hunt to kill them all sometime having to kill their own sons and daughters. it has great death scenes and shows that two sides can be correct and still clash.
22 episodes

ajin is about a couple humans that cant die that lead a revolution against the government cause they want control for the ajin. a new ajin almost joins them and then starts to stop them. really great fighting scenes and story.
2 seasons total 26 episodes

 

I don’t think most Anime does a good job about that...

Hmm... sounds interesting. I’ll check out ajin first because Twilight made me paranoid of the whole vampire genera. Not that I hate vampires; it’s just that they got too overused and sexualized, for some reason... I’ll definitely check out both of them though.

 

Racism, actually exploring social themes that are becoming more important to discuss in today's society, or gay jokes? On the racism end, Japan is the most xenophobic culture on the planet. Nothing more to say. On social issues, I guess you could say it provided a commentary about how liking lolis is wrong, because the main character is a horrible person, and by extension all people who like lolis are horrible, which given that it is a crime in almost every country, I think we have the answer there... And yeah, anime doesn't make enough tasteful gay jokes. When they do, they're just shitty and offensive.

 

I mean that’s expected from a country with almost zero immigration.

Imo SAO sucks just because it could have been so much better than it was :(
If you're looking for a good anime try Nichijou. It's a slice of life that's a bit...uh...different. But not in a creepy way

welp i suppose thats ur decision, but just wanna say that although the story is set in a really dark and gory world, its a lot more than that. its not one of the highest rated mangas ever for no reason lol. it really explores themes of comradery and shows the great development of a character. i suppose you could say its a bit over the top, but honestly it all comes together to make pretty much the best manga of all time :I (reeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeehttps://myanimelist.net/manga/2/Berserk)
i still highly recommend you at least try a couple of chapters (although you probably wont be able to appreciate it that much from only reading like the prologue thing :/) and give it a chance
also the movies are pretty ok as well
their cgi is a lot more moderate than the recent 2016-2017 anime and its not rly bothersome, and although it cuts quite a bit of content, it still generally tellls the whole story (golden age arc at least lol)
anyway i guess if you rly dont want to thats ur loss choice but if you do choose to try it out you can thank me after ;)

id think you'd have a better chance enjoying/getting into it if you watch the movies first cuz it does look better than the first couple of volumes and also just might be more enjoyable i geuss :\
