Good guess, because this has been confirmed already. Elements relate to powders. It's also confirmed that the earth element actually reduces powder effects.
And this is rare atm because powders are only obtainable at shrines (and some quests). But... this is not anywhere near the rarest. Powders now go up to 6 tiers, which means that this isn't anything like the rarest item in the game. And one more thing, on certain items you can use more than one powder. Actually some can have 3.

What do you mean earth reduces effects? My archer is build arround earth at the moment because strength is good for bobs mythic I think, but if I put green powder on my bow your saying it would reduce the dmg or just not be as effective as putting a diff. Powder on?

Well, I didn't know about that one. Since the update, I've only been on my old mage which had 3 slots on several items and on my new dark wizard which has 1 maybe 2 slots on its items.

I remember Salted saying in Gavel Teaser 13 (where he first explained the elements and how they worked) that the earth element makes powders less effective. And no, I don't mean the powder would reduce the weapons effects. I mean that the earth elements reduces the power the powder has on your weapon (so for example, I have a non-earth build. I use a powder on one of my items. I do the same with an earth build. The powder would be more effective on the non-earth build. This is what I think happens, I'm not sure how it would work though
