A thorough and worthy appraisal of the latest development in Twain lore. I'm not entirely convinced Alem is the physical body of Mael, it could simply be an apparition/projection of the ghostly spirit of Mael. The final cutscene never showed the spirits hostile to Mael as if they were fighting him, they just wished to 'pass on' and he granted them that service. You can see their goodwill towards him froms the two spirits looking towards his tombstone and it implies that the inscription is from the spirits, to which he was a "guide and friend". Mael has died, by whatever means, yet indeed remains on this world as a spirit. Perhaps it is a curse particular to his magic, we cannot know. What makes it hard to formulate theories is that it isn't possible to know the chronology of all the cutscenes. Spyrohawk and NinjaWizard's theory that Mael was fighting against these demonic entities could be true if they occurred whilst Mael was alive, however we see darkness overtook the Graveyard following Mael's death. The first four cutscenes could depict mortals using dark magics that result in their spirits remaining in this world, however, if these cutscenes happened after Mael's death, a different picture forms. Notice how the models in the summoning of the Eye Monster use wither heads and dark clothing, just like the contemporary ghost models. It implies that they are already ghosts as opposed to living humans practicing dark magic. When Mael died in battle, the spirits were not able to pass on and just accumulated at the Graveyard. Without Mael as a spiritual guide, they might turn to something else as their leader. Using the dark arts that caused them to end up in this state, they summon demons, such as the Eye Monster and winged monster in the church, to lead them/in exchange for access to the afterlife. These demons then causes the corruption we see about the Twain Estate.

I would see no evidence to Spyro's suggestion a battle happened in the Graveyard, I explored all the nooks and crannies I could find and believe that all these warriors could just be those who fought alongside the Mael brothers at the Nether portal and then were buried here. There are not the usual signs of battle that you might find, no gouges into the earth from meteors, it looks like a standard decrepit graveyard.

Mael has 4 letters, the quest name A Grave Mistake has 13 letters, 13 - 4 = 9. What a coincidence! 9/3 = 3. That must mean that Mael is illuminati confirmed.
