    TL;DR make a weapon slot so that weapon stats act like any other item stats.

    Currently, there is an issue with the weapon system being that the bonuses only apply when you hold onto it. This has a few problems, one being that when you go to your compass to view your player stats, it unequips therefore not showing the bonuses, this could easily be solved with a /stats command that basically brings up the stats screen. But unfortunately, that is not the only problem with the current system. Imagine you have 28 agility, and wish to equip a spectre, which requires 35 agility. You also happen to have a weapon that adds 7 agility. Currently, the problem is that 7 agility does not count from the weapon and you cannot wear the spectre (correct me if i am wrong) and even if you could, swapping items to say, a potion or horse saddle, would remove the bonus and subsequently the spectre as well.

    What i propose is a slot that the weapon sits in so that the stats are always added to the player. this would make things less confusing to new players and make more sense, as 7 agility is 7 agility, no matter what item it is on.

    There would be the obvious benefits of:
    Player stats would be able to show weapon statistics applied to the player.
    Stat consistency across items. (Why should weapon stats not count for requirements and others do?)
    Possible solution to dual wielding in 1.9 (Only can use one weapon, being in the weapon slot. only one weapons stats are applied)

    And the downsides being:
    One less slot for banking characters, not that it stopped accessory items from being added.
    Inability to re position the weapon

    As for the logical / lore side of things, "Why should your weapon give stats while not in your hands?" This would be simple, your item would be on your back, concealed or sheathed, perhaps a combination. Armor gives bonuses by being worn, so why not weapons in the same way? Which would be different, compared to your items in your magic bag (How else could it hold 20 sets of armor?)

    Lastly, this is irrelevant to this suggestion, but is too uncertain to be its own suggestion. Building on what was said before and combining it with

    We could potentially have an "ultimate" perk at max stats where you can use a shield or dual wield, for defense and dexterity, for example. this would come with downsides, like -35%-45% damage, for example. but could change game play much like mythical items do. This would obviously require 1.9

    Despite the fact that your suggestion is about 9 paragraphs long, I still ended up so very confused. So is your idea to add a slot for weapons so that players cannot lose them? Like armor slots?

    Basically, the idea is to have a slot for weapons so you can use their stats properly. Like say you have an item that needs 30 strength to use, your weapon adds 5 strength and you have 30. Generally you cannot use your weapon to equip that item, however i am suggesting this as a means to allow you to.

    What would happen to sub weapons? Would there be lessened stats on those wepaons or would they not effect the general stats?

    Or a secondary, back-up, etc. Baseically a weapon some one uses in other cases, like have a water/air build and having your water as main and the air as a secondary to run away with the speed boost.

    I think Salted said they were planning to fix the weapon stats by having the stats apply when you hold it for at least two seconds.

    Say, some Mage uses two weapons; A main damaging weapon (Like an Ethereal or something) and a secondary support weapon with high poison like Rotten Wood.
    by the way never use rotten wood in the nether

    I'm wondering how that would work, will weapons stats matter for equipting gear in that case or will it just be for the stats screen? also imagine lag / accidentally holding another staff then bam items pop off worst case they get deleted.

    Maybe if you don't put a weapon in the slot, it will just use the stats like that? Or perhaps we can have 2 slots, where whatever one is selected or was last selected counts? Which would be used both for duel wielding if we ever have that implemented (That can be a suggestion for another thread, different idea etc.) if we ever go in that direction. which probably won't be for a while.

    While not in the weapon slot, the weapons stats would apply but not count as requirements for armor and accessories. As this can lead to frustration when swapping weapons like item deletion and just general juggling of items in inv when your inv is not full. alternatively we can have a /weaponslot command to free up that extra space, if possible. So basically when no item is in the weapon slot, it behaves as the current system does.

    I mean we can make a work around for sub weapons, though the point is to at least have a stable option for all the people who rely on their weapon stats.

    There are so many problems with this idea.
    But the main problem is, what about the majority of us who actually use more than one weapon?
    E.g. I use Sanare for my main, powerful, spell damage wand. It has the water element, so will not damage some enemies much. Therefore, I need another weapon to go with it. So for now, I'm also using an air wand (can't remember its name) which gives xp bonus and an extra bit of mana regen, as well as dealing both neutral and air damage. This means that I can now fight enemies which are resistant to water. I also have a wand which helps me with grinding against most mobs. Now if there was a weapon slot, that would have to cover both. And since the weapon effects are always on you even if a weapon is in your bank, which is a broken idea anyway, then how would this work with two weapons? Would you have to have two weapon slots? But then, other people might want potions in their slots. Other people might have weapons in four of their inventory slots.
    The idea probably could be added in some way, but seriously? All of this just to do simple addition/subtraction you could do in seconds, if that?

    Wot? Replace weapon with accessory and armor, as its by "slot" we already have dedicated slots for other shit and this has just confused me because there are no armor slots in the ender chest? u wot

    As i said in the quote, if possible i would have a command to disable the slot which when not in use would mimic the current setup.

    Yeah, I used to have a secondary weapon when powders worked. Primary for dmg, with fire or sharpness depending on which class, and secondary with knockback incase I got in a tricky situation.

    I literally don't understand why people do "no" instead of "Yes, but only the /stats command." Like wot, you would rather not know what your stats are including weapon bonuses, without figuring it out manually? That or they didn't read and just hit no. Lol.
