"I know this isn't a humane thing to do, but you're a god of destruction, no? If whatever's causing you problems is the thing after him, why not use him as bait? Set up your forces, focus their fire on an area, then use the draconian to lure him near." Iruk says, trying to think things through.

He gives the healer a hand gesture, and all wounds and spent ammunition is recovered.
Your opponent hands you your blade, then offers a handshake.

Most of the guards seem to be busy holding back a riot.

 

Stephanie reaches for the crystalline chest, which crackles with magic once her hands get close.

 

Enqo eventually gets to the end of the book, nothing that interesting or eye-catching.

"In hindsight, that would be the best solution. However, I simply do not have enough information on what, or who, are chasing down the draconian. For all I know, the enemy could be immune to conventional attacks or to magic or something. It's too much of a gamble."

Helianthus accepts the handshake.

 

Ruby seems even more interested by this.
"You might want to open this away from prying eyes." She says, glancing off at the horizon.

"Can you question him without revealing his exact location? If you know he's there, then he should be able to hear you. But, that in mind, if they're biological, don't they need to eat?"

"How much combat experience do you have? I've never seen that much out of a human before."

 

"Oh, uh, ok." Stephanie says, summoning her tome and flipping through the pages. She begins drawing various runes in the air, before they flash and the area around Stephanie disappears.

 

Rineth groans.
"Just don't revel in your find too long; we're about to leave!"

 

Despite not responding, it seems Stephanie heard. She reappears a few moments later.

"It was just a bunch of various mage crystals, nothing big." Stephanie says, reaching for the last chest. There's something offputting about the chest, though nobody can seem to put their finger on it.

 

Ruby stops Stephanie from opening it.
"Something's not right with it. Don't open it here." She warns.

 

"Oh, what's wrong with it?" Stephanie asks.

 

"I don't know, but there's something... sinister about it. At least take it to a pocket dimension and have Aj come to help get you out if needed."

 

"Hmm..." Stephanie says. Stephanie's Shadow wolf runs away from the group, and Stephanie hops off and puts the chest on the ground, before jumping back on and riding back.

"Artemis, could you open that chest for me?" Stephanie asks.

Artemis' hands glow as she raises them upwards, causing a pair of vine hands to open the chest and reveal rows of sharp teeth. The chest immediately jumps onto Artemis' vine hands and bites them off.

"Mimic." I say, shaking my head.

 

"That could've done a number on you." Ruby says, relieved.
"What's a mimic?" Ihra asks, confuses.

 

"It's a type of monster that disguises itself as a chest. If you open it, it reveals itself and most likely kills you by biting you in half." I explain.

Artemis' vine hands regrow and pull a large wooden hammer out of the ground, before smashing the mimic with massive force. Blood, bones, organs and treasure go everywhere.

 

"It would seem like I would be talking to myself. Also, for some reason, he doesn't appear to need to eat."

"Quite a lot. I just don't fight as good as I used to after switching bodies a lot and using a weapon not suited to my fighting style." Helianthus explains, "I would probably perform better with a knife, or a dagger."

"Doesn't surprise me. Quite the bit of creatures can survive without eating."
I say, suddenly.

 

"I was right to come back...", I mutter.
I fly over the gate and the ravine around the palace and land inside the palace grounds in front of the door.

Enqo places the book back on the shelf.
He then makes a telepathic link to Terrae.
"Can you bring me back to the group? I'll look at your library a little more later. Also, can you bring me without anyone being able to notice?"

 

"So, it can shapeshift into a chest but then is stuck like that?" Ihra seems a bit less confused and a bit more nauseous.

"Did you even give him food to see if he does?"

"Unless he's a robot, he'd need to do something, and hiding under a floating fortress wouldn't allow photosynthesis."

There's only one guard to greet you.
"Eras... Since Brisingr erupted, we can't get some of the goods we're used to always having. Some of the people think it's just a ploy to make the king more wealthy, but there really isn't anything we can do about the situation..." The guard says, out of breath.

 

"Not really. The monster is the chest." I say.

 

"That's... kind of scary. I guess that's just another danger to treasure hunting. But, why didn't it reveal itself when Stephanie was retrieving it?"

 

"They tend to reveal themselves once they're opened, as to get the jump on people." I say.
