I fly over to the top to get a look at where the light is from.

 

Alright. This is probably my final question. Do you know what the Birthlake is?

 

"That was done by the Birthlake. The magic from the Birthlake changes all life in the forest in many different ways."

As you fly up, you see a root scuttling up the trunk surprisingly quickly.
When you reach the top, you see a wooden figure talking to Artemis. They are glowing slightly, and so is a stump of wood behind them.

Yes, it's the lake in the centre of the forest. It's filled with magic and helps to make the forest thrive. The path you're walking on now leads to it.

 

Okay. Well, have any more questions?

 

I survey the area, keeping an eye for anything suspicious.

 

"Do you welcome the changes it brings to your forest? Surely it must be hard controlling sentient plants." Artemis asks.

 

"I... don't know if I want to be bit."

 

What is your group doing? There are so many different beings here...

Other than the root, which seems to be panicking after seeing you fly past it, there isn't anything coming anywhere near the top of the tree.

"The forest wouldn't exist without the Birthlake. Some plants aren't very friendly at all, but they usually live in other areas of the forest and stay away from the plants nearer to here. As for sentient plants, they can sometimes be mischievous or they try to do things they shouldn't, but it's hard to dislike sentient plants, no matter what they do."

"Are you metallic?"

 

"Me?! No... No, I'm not."

 

Right now? We're visiting the Birthlake. In general? Trying to help Ihra.

 

"But...couldn't you just stop the plants from harming those that mean no harm? You could simply remove the unfriendliness from the plants." Artemis asks.

 

"Then she won't try to bite you at all. She doesn't bite people even if they have metal on them."

Who is Ihra?

 

So, in our group, there's a few beings called Draconians. They're the ones with horns. Ihra is the youngest one.

 

"Ah, that's convenient."
She keeps stroking Aura.
"I can't believe she's the same species as the ones attacking our home..."

I land near Artemis and the Wooden Figure, but remain silent.

 

Artemis shoots you a wary and suspicious look.

 

"It's hard to remove powerful magic. Even Eras might have trouble doing that. The magic of the Birthlake is a self-adapting, automatically working, infinite spell, like the one he made which creates the monsters in and around the Darklands. And even I find it hard to tell the difference between good and bad plants. They are too similar, and in some places they live alongside each other. Most bad plants are only 'bad' because they attack anything which moves around them, which is only a few plants and any outsiders."

Oh, the one who seems to be connected with plants? She seems powerful... but she is very young.

"All monsters act like completely different creatures when threatened by something else. The wild Wind Dragons have always been very territorial, especially when it comes to metal. Aura is different, likely because she has become used to those around her giving her metal when she needs it. If they were threatened, that would explain their behaviour."

The wooden figure says, "Oh, hello! Who might you be?"

 

"So, helping them may solve the issue?"
"Mother, let us go investigate first."

 

"I'm sorry your forest must be burdened with such strong magic." Artemis says.

 

Well, she looks young. She's the youngest of the Draconians in our group, but she's one of the older beings in our group. I actually think I'm the youngest.
