"They're all kills. Sometimes we needed more than one bot for coordinated strikes to avoid tripping silent alarms."

 

"I was told to come here for some pay." I say.

 

"Just know that every passing second you're with us is precious to us. I...I don't want to say goodbye, Ihra. You're too good to lose," I say, failing to stop tears, "I know all good things must come to an end, but...your actions are so heroic, saving your race and helping Xlentia. I just wish it didn't have to go this way. I just wish we could have more time. You don't deserve this, Ihra, you deserve so much better. A life free from all this stress and murder attempts, you shouldn't have to take a hit for your race like that."

I hug Ihra tightly, tears running down my face.

 

"Yeah, if you asked for a job. I suppose I'll let you keep working..."

"Everybody else is sitting back being mind controlled. If not me, who?"
She barely cracks a smile.
"Now, come on. The guards'll really hate me if they think I made you cry."

 

"Huh. But as in, specific targets, what were some of the missions?"

 

"Most of them draconians plotting against The Hive. A lot of 'intercept X before they do Y' jobs. Some of them people from other worlds working on cures for mind control, whether they knew of our race or not."

 

"Huh. So getting an assignment for someone who freed three draconian which simply ticked off the Hive Master was kind of an unexpected one."

 

"Yeah. Nobody's gotten that far, to say the least. Kind of impressed when I heard it; I just wanted to hear it from you to see if you knew what you did or not."

 

"It's not like I did anything too great. Two stuffed themselves in my sword, almost dying, and one I stalled out of chopping my head off."

 

"Q."

"Huh. Your name's simple, like mine."

 

"Yeah. Backstory's not simple, that's for sure."

 

"Lemme guess. Someone was real imaginative and just named a sequence one, two, three, and you were the Thirteenth?" he says jokingly, not expecting to be right in the least.

 

"A group of someones, and not exactly. Story for another time, Q."

 

"Wait, you what?"

"Er... Are you okay, mister?"

 

He shrugs.
"Suit yourself."

"Hmm? Oh yeah, sorry. Just woke up," says Q, yawning.

 

"You look like you're being hung..."

 

"Well, there was recently an all-out war thing, and a couple of draconians came after me. I cut down one, then two charged me. I slice at one, and he goes into my sword. I'm still not sure what the term for that is supposed to be. Then, the other tackled me to the ground, and my sword fell on it. Things happened, I got crippled, and another knocked me down. I kept talking, then eventually escaped. The legions left, which broke the mind control connections. The one that I escaped from was freed, and I removed the two from my sword and Ihra healed them, and they're free now."
Pause.
"Get it now?"

 

"So bringing those who are mind controlled and not robots next to death and bringing them back from the brink breaks the control... I pity those who wasted years testing spells to fail to discover something you stumbled upon by accident."

 

"Yeah, imagine that. 'Hey, you know this thing you've been working on for years? Yeah, this robot who just recently stumbled across this new species did it for you.' That'd be terrible."

 

"Well, maybe death is an easier pill to swallow for them than that... not like I can change it now."
He looks at the lone blade on his wing.
"Would it kill you to show me where our battle was? I'd like to be at least able to defend myself."
