“For the most part, yes. I can hold off sarcasm for a bit.”

“Remember, tell nobody what you did last night. I already burned the fabric you brought.”

“It’s definitely easier to go with what already is used.” Arkclal nods.

 

"I'll keep my mouth shut."

 

"Besides, it's mostly for the people. They like to have people to look up to and talk to about their problems," I say, "Even if it is just menial things..."

 

“Good. Then let’s start.”

 

“I find the latter is mostly because people tend to not have the resources to solve their own problems, or they’re not in a healthy frame of mind and use those resources to make more problems. This place seems different, though.”

“I suggest you give me some time, both so you can finish relaying your orders if necessary and I have a chance to get closer to the portal entry.”

“Stay safe out there, wherever you wind up going.”

 

"Does that mean you're going to leave me alone, now?"

 

"A dream world."

 

"Every time I leave you I have to rehack Stella's connection... so no. I'm probably not going to leave you alone for a while, especially since I haven't actually gotten an in to Stella's network before."

"Don't forget to actually go places in this world." Rem chuckles.

 

"I think it's mostly because they look up to someone powerful and want assistance from them over someone weaker. Well, that and bragging rights that you got something from the highest royalty." I say.

 

"Yeah, yeah. I'll see where I can get to."

 

"Alright."
I look around to see where I am now.

 

"Any sort of companionship goes a long way, but royalty usually has the resources to do so."

You're just outside the library, or at least what remains of it.

Idhaenna's forces seem to be reluctantly working alongside a few remaining citizens to keep the flames at bay, Scurn signalling you to follow him down a half an alleyway.

"I suppose now is a good time to mention that the crystal will only show up in the real world. Don't get too lost in the dream world."

 

I follow Scurn.

 

"That too. When someone's newborn child is dying, they come to you to ask the help of the best forest and death guardians under your command. Then you have to choose whether or not to actually ask them to do that since their job isn't to bring back the dead unnecessarily, it's to balance the population for the good of the environment." I say, sounding exhausted.

 

"How do I break it then?"

 

“With your hands. It just won’t work, or appear, in the dream world or spectral plane.”

“Your reality sounds hell-bent on finding and maintaining perfect balance.”

He brushes a heap of ash off a manhole, glancing at you.
“Care to save me some trouble?” He asks, stepping aside.

 

"The guardians want it after the humans disrupted it. If anything, it's a projection of what Gaia wants, but the greed of humans was underestimated. They started taking and breeding far more than the environment could handle, and when the guardians tried to stop them, they fought back," I say, "Personally, the alliance we sorted out with them lets us more easily feast on them. The human population goes down, we get good food."

 

I try to take off the manhole.

 

It comes off fairly easily, though it lands with a forceful thud as it creates a sizable ash cloud.
Scurn dives in, trying not to cough excessively.

“I mean, it sounds like a perfectly fine system on your end, but why not let them bring themselves to ruin? The true enemy of a wasteful society is time, why not abuse that?”

 

I jump in after Scurn.
