"Yeah, go ahead."

 

"You, being one of Ihra's closest friends. Of course, tangents aside, I really should be heading back. You as well, at that - unless you didn't get the proxy from Arie."

The rough gravel doesn't seem quite as bad on your bestial paws, though they're dusty and you can already notice your fur tinged a dirty grey.

As you walk along the coast, the waves seem to be slowly slinking away from the shoreline. There's not anything you see living out here - not even plants or small creatures - even in the tidepools.

 

"I think you should be." I say, crossing my arms.

 

“Avis?”
Crystal calls out loudly.


I give myself some space away from the naga before taking out my hammer and smashing it against the ground.

 

He snickers.
“So they really screwed things up that badly here? Okay, let me try one more time - would you tell me your name if I wasn’t human?”

Crystal’s voice echoes slightly, but he hears nothing else in response.


It still doesn’t stir, but you knock the rest of the door out of the doorframe in doing so.

 

"That depends." I say, keeping my gaze on the human.

 

“Okay...”
Pause.
“Yeah, worth a shot.” He shrugs, grabbing his sword by the blade and planting the hilt in the ground.

A fiery arachnid demon climbs out of the ground, bowing to you.
“You never had much tact, did you?” It asks the human.
“I mean, you aren’t human, so maybe he’d actually talk to you?”
“You are... definitely a piece of work.”

The arachnid turns back to you, bowing again.
“I was told you are this othersoul reality’s demon king of kings?”

 

“Aaaaaaaaviiiiiiis?”


I resort to giving the naga a solid smack on the face.

 

"I may be." I say, watching the scene.

 

“I hope you can pardon my brother. He’s a bit excitable around anything and anyone he hears called a ‘strong demon.’ You seem a far cry from the term demon, though I suppose that also makes you not one for unsolicited praise.”

“If you keep talking like that, Emerald’s gonna have to come chase all three of us down.” The human mumbles, stretching.
“I would say to stop making yourself look worse in front of royalty, but you’ve already dug beyond the depths of hell.” The arachnid grumbles, glaring at the human.
“Okay, fine, but what am I supposed to do now? Drop my name out there and walk away hoping he says something?”
“It’s terribly offensive that I’m related to you at all...”

Arie seems to be trying to ignore the situation by means of burying her face in the ground.

Still no response. No sounds, no movement, nothing.


They grunt, slowly and wearily stirring.
Very slowly.

 

"...Where is she?"
He resorts to asking Linoa.


I continue smacking the naga like how a cat would continuously whap at something.
"This place is burning down, you ought to leave."
I say, matter-of-factly.

 

"It's peaceful."

 

"Hiding. Duh."


They groan, putting up an arm to block your swatting.
"Rgh... cut it out... I've got a better chance down here than out there."

The rocks are kinda making my feet itchy, but other than that I like it here. I mean, totally unblocked view of the sunrise, if you were in to that kinda thing. Seems kinda... untouched, though. Like, I don't think anyone's been here in a while with this much dust.

The breeze seems to roll back and forth, gently pushing debris to either side.

 

"It's a good place to relax though, putting the gravel aside, cause I rather lay on the sand."

 

“But, we’re friendly.”


I stop swatting him for a moment.
“Is there anything under this rug?”

 

I smile at the scene playing out in front of me, seeming rather smug.

"Well, you certainly seem like the better type to talk to." I say to the arachnid.

 

“She’s still shy, and doesn’t know that you’re friendly.”


“If I tell you, will you keep quiet about me not being dead?”

They try to keep a straight face, but wind up cracking a smile.
“As an ambassador, I would hope so.”
“Oh please, you’re hardly approachable to anyone other than another demon.”
“And you just aren’t approachable.” The arachnid retorts.
“Well, I’m heading back. Have fun walking.”
“Right, off you go.”
The human scoffs, heading off towards the shadow palace.

I wonder what made it have gravel instead of sand.

As you walk, you see a piece of shredded fabric sticking slightly out of the gravel.

 

"Does she know you're friendly?"


"Sure. I don't give a shit."

 

"So who was the human?" I ask, sounding a little more serious.

 

“Felnir, unfortunately my brother and aspiring necromancer. Fortunately for the rest of us, his magical prowess is on par with his communication skills.”

“Yes, I’m the one who usually feeds her.”


“The head librarian is kept on ice down there. Gonna need an HF blade to cut through the lock. They keep the key in... hell, I dunno. ‘Ts above my paygrade anyways.”
