"But they had language."

I nod, focusing on the task at hand.

 

They wind up grabbing an old bloodstained spear.
"Can't you just let an undead feed?" Amber's voice echoes from the ground.

"That's my point. They're in the strange middle ground, the rare ones. Something weird's going on for that to happen, I think."


You've got a whole city ahead of you... at least, one that's in the process of being razed. It's hard to tell what's what amidst the chaos, but you can sense a few hundred basements being buried by rubble. If you act fast, or at least faster than the rampaging dragons and draconians, you might be able to find a civilian willing to give you a hint or tip on where to look.

 

"...Okay."


I fly closer to the ground, trying to spot any actual people.

 

The Earth guardian drops the spear immediately, seeming surprised and scared.

 

The spear clatters to the ground before being grabbed by claws attached to somewhat rotten flesh and merging back into the ground.

“Eh, that works. Thanks.”

“Again, I can always just go back later without you. Don’t worry about it.”


Any actual people are being singled out and hunted by the invading troops, but you can see a few life signatures beneath piles of rubble.

 

"Sure. I've been out long enough."

 

The Earth guardian immediately sinks back into the ground, and seemingly runs away through it.

 

“Okay.”
Pause.
“What now.”


I head straight towards the rubble, focusing on removing the smallest amount that has life under it.

 

Amber trails them from a bit of a distance, now curious.

Appreciated.

You know, I don’t understand how some werewolves just stay out constantly. We kinda need each other, so why would you mess with that? It’s like the biting the hand that feeds saying or something.

“Up to you. I might go check on Avis, though.”


You find what looks to be the remains of a small house covering a basement hatch without a lock.

 

“Avis?”


I throw open the hatch, peering inside.

 

""Stubborness, pride, stuff like that. You're way stronger in your werewolf form, so why ever change out of it."

 

The earth guardian runs back to a group of other guardians, mostly toward what seems to be an older death guardian who comforts them after they explain what they saw.

Amber waits, particularly curious about the death guardian.

But wet fur is really annoying, and you're a lot smarter than I am. I think.

The pair seem to talk for a while, before the death guardian looks directly toward Amber.

 

"Mind if I pop out for a bit?" Amber asks.

 

Thanks I'll think about it for a bit.

 

The death guardian sighs, and waves Amber away.
