Void Rift (rp) - Intermission

"Thanks!" Katie says appreciatively, putting on the necklaces and picking the box back up. Katie heads toward the exit of the palace, head held high.

 

I relax as I continue to watch them.

 

Soul and Lune try to make a sharp turn, but Buddy winds up bowling them over as the frisbee gets flung off to the side.

Serra smirks at the literal dogpile.

The door’s left open, the courtyard dimly lit in contrast to the twisting dark fields outside.

The voidling from the charm skitters onto the box.
“Where-are-we-go-ing?” It asks in a string of dry chirps.

 

"To the edge of the void!" Katie says positively, trying to smile. Her expression falters a bit as she looks out across the void.

 

The voidling lets out a series of annoyed chirps as it paces back and forth on the box.
“Where-is-the-in-st-ruc-tions? What-do-they-say?”


Amber rises from the ground near Vexa’s forge, putting on the charm Mortius gave her before walking up to knocking on the door.

 

"Um, I have to take it to the beast who wants it and open it." Katie says happily.


A few moments later, Vexa walks up to the door and opens it, smiling.

"Please, come in, there's no need to knock." Vexa says happily.

 

“Do-you-know-which-bea-st?”


Amber pats out the embers from the sunlight before she put the charm on. She then pulls her lance out of her chest and mends the resulting hole.
“Apologies, I had some troubles finding this place.”

 

Katie shakes her head.

"I just have a number." Katie says.


Vexa looks a little confused at Amber's state, but shrugs it off.

"What brings you to my humble shop?" Vexa asks calmly.

 

“Well. Which-num-ber?”


“My sister. Specifically, her will. Pardon my undeath.” She says, offering Vexa a summoned box with inlaid rubies.

 

Katie thinks for a moment.

"113 Echo." Katie recites.


"O-Oh..." Vexa says, starting to lose composure, "I...I see."

Vexa shakily accepts the box, though seems hesitant to open it.

 

“That-s-easy! Fo-llow-the-a-rrow.” It says, going back into the charm as a thin line faintly glows purple, pointing ahead and slightly to the right.


“There were two other things.” Amber says, summoning another box.
“One of them is a pair of daggers with an orichalcum edge.” She adds, offering Vexa another box.

 

Katie does as told, following the line obediently while keeping an eye out for anything hostile.


Vexa puts the first box down on her counter before accepting the second.

"S-She wanted me to have these?" Vexa asks, eyes getting wet.

 

She’s soon lead off the main path through the Void, the floor twisting up to become the ceiling as Katie winds up standing horizontally... maybe? It’s insanely disorienting, but the voidling keeps pointing her further into the labyrinthine surfaces.


“She said that being a merchant, you could sell them. The same can’t be said for the last thing. She waited for this... last hurrah. Burnt herself out on it and left the finished product in her ashes. A bit stereotypical that an artisan’s best craft is their last, but it seems safer in your hands than just anyone else’s.”

 

Katie stumbles a bit, but freezes her feet to keep her stable. Katie keeps going, despite the disorientation.


Vexa nods, finding it hard to speak as she puts the dagger box next to the ruby one.

 

I chuckle a bit.

 

She winds up stepping on something’s eye, the floor seeming to drop from under her.


Amber summons a shining blade, encrusted with rubies and a few orichalcum detailings along with an extremely fine edge.
“Meant for you and you alone. It’s incredibly well balanced, and she said there are too many enchantments for her to explain before she passed.”
Amber offers the hilt to Vexa, claws steering very clear from the edge of the blade.
“Not to kill the moment, but she said there was more she made... with the rather selfish catch that you help our reality through its turmoil. She made orichalcum edged weapons of seven other types, but hid them and never told me where they were. Apparently this blade is the key to finding them. Kind of a lame recruitment method, but it’s still up to you.”

“Social creatures, aren’t they...” Serra comments.

 

Katie screams, firing out a stream of water, desperately trying to affix it to a solid surface.


Vexa reaches out to take it, before pausing, hesitant.

"Sh-She wanted me to take this? To fight for her?" Vexa asks through held breath.

 

“Quite.”
I nod.

 

She falls all of a meter, a tunnel ahead of her.
"Get-mo-vin! Thing-s'll-come!" The voidling urges. "Strai-ght! Go!"


"She wanted you to take this blade to remember her. Fighting in her stead is optional. I assure you, simply keeping this blade in your possession is enough to honor her. All I've been told about it is that it functions as a guide to more of her works for you to sell, and it is the most powerful creation she's ever made."

"Where are you from, anyways? You were, like, seriously old tech before."

 

"Far away. As in, another reality far away. At least, I'm pretty sure."
