"Like that feeling in your arm when you hit your elbow?"

 

"Ah, right. Thank you, Katie, and again I apologize. Things have changed so much, it's almost strange. So many of our sick were cured by the respite, myself included."

"Yeah, except it can happen anywhere. Super annoying, but I'll take it over pain."

 

"It's really nice here, I like it a lot more than the place outside of it." Katie says happily.

 

"Yes, I'm glad the ruin seems to have lightened up a bit. I remember when you first came here, your friend Artemis fell ill within minutes. Or, that's what my scouts told me, at least... I doubt that's true."

 

"Ew.. I personally hate that feeling, so I guess it really isn't that much better."

 

“It’s better than screaming in pain and scaring everyone around you.”

 

"Okay, yeah. But it's still an annoying feeling, isn't it?"

 

“Oh, absolutely. The tingling sucks, but you can still move without being sensitive to pain.”

 

"Ah, it's like that."

 

"She did," Katie nods, "She's been ill again, but that's not because of here."

 

“Is she okay? I could spare a bit of the medicine we’ve been using to counteract the effects of the ruin; apparently it’s been feeding on our innate magic even though we’re incapable of using any.”

“Yeah. Still not fun, but not excruciating.”

 

"I think she got better actually," Katie says, thinking, "But I don't want to take your medicine. Then you wouldn't have some if you needed it!"

 

"Let's just drop the chatter about pain for now."

 

"I appreciate it, but I was the first one of my people treated. I think most of the people who have chosen to live within the respite have been treated already."

"Sounds good."
Pause.
"What's your Sgavrinn friend like?"

 

"Well...I suppose I could take some." Katie smiles.

 

"If she gets sick again, it should work against nullmagic. I guess the old king and queen were working on a sort of cure for the ruin, and the new rulers managed to modify it to cure a being instead of the air."
She turns towards another entryway and hurls one of her paintbrushes in its direction. A few seconds later, a guard comes back with the brush in hand.
"Yes, Matriarch?"
"Could you fetch a vial of the respite cure?"
"What for?"
"Miss Katie has a friend that has fallen ill, and I think permitting them to study our cure may help their recovery."
"As you wish, one minute please."
The Matriarch takes the paintbrush from the guard before the guard leaves.

 

Katie waits patiently, glancing around at the art.

 

One piece that catches her eye is a sea dragon who looks utterly terrified in a grounded arena that’s surrounded by heavily armed guards. In front of it is an equally terrified youth. The single opening in the circle of guards leads to a heavy metal gate being risen, and the guards behind the dragon and youth seem to be about to march forward with their weapons held ahead.

 

"Cheerful. Very cheerful, though not the brightest."

 

Fybus snickers.
