"Well, I've helped her out when she's been feeling sad, but that's because I'm her best friend!" Katie says cheerily, "Plus, Abigail is super confident. When she aims for a goal, she goes and gets it!"

 

“Most kitsune don’t... well, most things feel more comfortable with their feet on the ground.”

Maybe? I thought he stayed home.”

Mavis shakes its head.
“I admire your confidence in her, but pleassse... ssshe’sss been worrying me for monthsss. Unlessss ssshe’sss crazier than I thought, sssomething’sss not quite right.”

 

"What do you mean?" Katie asks, confused.

 

“Ssshe ssseemsss to be trying to run from sssomething. I don’t know what it isss, but it ssseemsss to be ssscaring her.”

 

"Right now? Where is she?" Katie asks, worried.

 

“For a while, now. Ssshe’sss hiding from it, running from it... I wisssh I could tell you, ssshe endangersss many I protect when ssshe’sss ssscared.”

 

"We've gotta kill it before it hurts her! I don't want some creature scaring my best friend!" Katie says confidently.

 

I thought it was a female dragon. Might ha en also been a neighbor.

"Yep. We'd most likely die falling such a distance."

 

"I don't even know if it'sss alive. Sssomething'sss definitely bothering her, though."

"You know that skydiving is a thing, right?"

Maybe it was. You're the brains here.

 

"Well yeah.. but you can still die. We didn't plan on skydiving, so if we fell, we're dead."

 

"Fair enough. Dying's sort of... everywhere, though. Kinda stupid how many different ways you can die, if you ask me."

 

"There are lots of stupid ways. There are some good ways too, ofcourse."

 

"She seemed perfectly fine the last time I saw her though." Katie says, thinking.

 

“You have a way you’d like to die? That’s sort of morbid.”

“Ssshe keepsss it to herssself, I can tell... like pressssure in a volcano, due to erupt.”

 

Katie giggles.

"She likes volcanoes!" Katie says happily.

 

"No, I'm talking about dying of old age, or dying in battle. You know?"

 

“I wasss hoping it would aid the metaphor...” Mavis sighs.

“Old age I understand, but battle I’m not big on.”

 

"Well... I rather die in battle then because of a decease or a fall."

 

"She doesn't seem like the type of person to bottle things up like that, she's always been pretty...clear about her emotions." Katie admits.

 

"Fair. I... still don't know why you've already thought about this. You're not even old yet."
