The girl seems to calm down a bit, though still looks ready to bolt at any moment; or more likely, freeze herself.

 

Mavis backs up even more.
“Are you lossst, missss? Or jussst exploring?”

“It’s male, and I have no idea. Are you talking to yourself?”

No, I thought it was the neighbor dragon.

 

The girl speaks with a soft and innocent tone.

"J...Just exploring." The girl says nervously.

 

“Are you a guardian? Your powersss ssseem familiar from sssomeone named Katie.”

 

The girl jumps a bit at the mention of 'Katie'.

"U-Uhm...I'm uh..." The girl says nervously, seeming to struggle with what to say.

"I'm...a...human, uhm...born with...magical powers." The girl says, though she's clearly lying.

 

Mavis’ tongue flickers.
“Ssseeking a new identity, are we?”

 

The girl takes another step backward.

"Uhm...n-no...I'm not Katie." Katie lies.

 

“Oh? Then what’sss your name, missss?”
Mavis checks Katie’s soul to make sure it actually is Katie.

"Umm...Dani." Katie says.

 

“Sssoulsss don’t lie, Katie. Isss sssomething going wrong at your home?”

 

"Um...Uhhhh..." Katie says, lost for words as ice begins to cover her feet.

 

“Child, you will tire yourssself. Many can sssee sssoulsss.”

 

"I-I just wanted to sneak around like Aj and Abigail does all the time!" Katie confesses, defeated.

 

“Both can cloak, neither rely on disssguisssesss.”

"There was a dragon who helped us get to the Ziz when it was causing trouble. I remember Anne not liking it, cause the dragon was flying kind of reckless, so to speak."

 

"Abigail did." Katie says, crossing her arms and looking annoyed.

 

“There’s no smooth flight through storms.”

Gram was injured, it wasn’t him.

"I'm not stronger than Abigail. She's really brave, but she's always helped me out." Katie says happily.

 

“Ssshe dwellsss in her failuresss. Ssshe isss her own undoing... you’re ssstronger than you ssspeak of yourssself. Ssstrong enough to sssave her from herssself.” Mavis says, sounding concerned. “Keep an eye on her, ssshe’sss unsssure of herssself.”
