"Safer for you, perhaps. Tell me, how often do you send travelers across the stars?"

"She knows more than she lets on. If you think she's hiding something, just keep pressing her. She'll crack eventually."

 

"Rarely. There have been 3 recorded vessels into deep space in the past one hundred years." Eve says.

 

Idhaenna glances at a holographic notification that pops up.
"Planets live and die, such is the cycle. Magic may be strong, and it may equal many technologies at first, but you limit yourself greatly. You strengthen it not through magic itself, but by assimilating tech modified to be compatible with your systems. Before I continue, your thoughts on that would be appreciable."

 

"I'm not really a person to keep putting pressure on someone until they break. But thanks for the tip, I'll consider it."

 

"No problem. Hopefully she doesn't decide to be stubborn, then."

 

"Magic is certainly more prominent in my reality than here. Guardians are specifically designed to be powerful elemental magic users, while humans who lack magic resort to technology. Automated magic, magitech, provides the connection to the universe around us with the inorganic nature of a machine. Golems require stronger magic the more complex and stronger they are, but robots just require power. Power taken from an inexhaustible source is more reliable than a stronger yet finite fuel." Eve explains.

 

Idhaenna smiles.
"A stronger yet infinite fuel, I believe you meant to say. However, I do hope you're not here to try and convince me to adopt magitech, because I'm not afraid to cut chances of an alliance to scrap you for such a blasphemous act." She says, tone going from bright to brutally serious.

 

"No, finite is correct. Consider this, a fuel source you cannot deplete, but runs your machines at half efficiency, or a fuel source that is limited and consumed quickly, but runs your machines at double efficiency. In the long term, the infinite source is more reliable," Eve says, "I calculate you only have a fifteen percent chance of successfully scrapping me should you attempt to. Inversely, I calculate an ninety percent chance of me avoiding all attempted harm should you turn hostile, and a sixty five percent chance of any harm done being self-repairable."

 

"As long as you do not suggest I adopt magic, you will not have to find out why your calculations are sorely incorrect." Idhaenna says, glaring. "Now, I suggest you do a little more research before you declare exponential energy growth finite."

 

"I do not understand your hostility, though I apologise for anything I may have said wrong," Eve says apologetically, "I didn't come here to antagonise you. I just wanted to learn more about what you were doing."

Eve starts to sound a little more human again.

 

Idhaenna narrows her eyes before sighing.
"Girl, hasn't anyone told you not to lose yourself?"

 

"Many times, including myself." Eve says, smiling; amused.

 

"Don't forget that." She says, lightening up a bit.
"Anyhow... any specific field you'd like to know more about?"

 

"What fields are there?" Eve asks.

 

"She's been helpful. I can tell you that much."

He leans against the wall.
"So.. now what?"

 

"I dunno. I'm not you."

"Well, let's split it up a bit more first. There's four big research heads, each focusing on one particular thing. All of their info comes to me anyways, but they try to keep each other in the dark. SceraCorp works on hazardous environment mechs, as well as remote-neural links; Amdri works on core tech and digitization; Galsce Labs are the go-to for communications and nanotech; and then there's me, working on power distribution, storage, and starship design. Care to pick one of those four to narrow down possible projects?"

 

"Wanna show me around a bit?"

 

"Personally I'd be interested in learning about your nanotech." Eve says enthusiastically.

 

“Galsce it is. Let me get you in touch with their R&D, should just be a minute.”

“Sure. Do you just wanna wander around a bit, or you looking for something in particular?”

 

Eve waits patiently.
