"Why is that? Shouldn't it be easier cause you can change yourself?"

 

“No, none of the high gods do.”

“Once they find out I can change, I get fired.”

 

"So what does his power of history mean?" I ask, confused.

 

“It means he knows every trick you’ve used this far.”

 

"But... you're in a town full of shapeshifters. How is that a problem?"

 

"Oh...shit." I swear, looking a little shocked.

 

I take the cards, putting them into a discard pile of sorts, then start dealing out more cards.
"Is this what you guys do every night?"

 

“He’s working with Atavul to draw us out of moves. Rebirth and history are a painful combination.”

“Minus some drinking.” Al says, the others sort of blankly staring at you.

“Jobs are scarce.”

 

"Which one would you say we should go after once we've freed Virei'tus?" I ask.

 

"You seem more used to it than these lot."
I gesture to the other three.

 

“I don’t know if you should prioritize Virei’tus. He’s a big threat, but we can’t past forever if Atavul and O’rogal are left to themselves.”

“My parents were chronic drunks. I was born with the pointless gift of holding down whatever I put through me.”

 

"So...O'rogal?" I suggest.

 

"That's... at least good for when you're gambling."

 

"Huh.. I didn't think it would be that difficult to get a job in a town with your own race."

 

“Your call. There is no walk in the park option at this point.”

“It’s just that we need fewer people to do things.”

”Good enough to keep me unemployed and the wealthiest out of all of us.” He shrugs.

 

"That's life. We develop. You can't help it."

 

“Are you trying to practice counting cards?”

 

"What do you mean by that?" I ask, curious.

 

“True.” They comment.

“You can either go up against an army that never loses a member, a school that can overpower Praecantatia, or Lux’s equivalent who’s both strong against you and has a particular ire against Lux and Tenebrae.”

“I never count cards.”

 

"I...uh..." I say, losing confidence.
