“Always. How long is it going to take?” Emerald asks, a spirit version of her continuing on.

You give yourself the four and seven of clubs.

“Not yet.” Al says, before pausing.
“...Nevermind. I can’t keep track.” He sighs, pushing his chip stack aside.

 

“Oh, but surely deep down you have something in one crazy dream or another. Everyone does.”

 

"Oh yeah, but I ain't sharing."

 

"I just have a few questions relating to the hive master and the light rifles." I say.

 

"What, not going to play?"

 

“Just play without chips.”

“Right, you aren’t fond of cross-reality targeting. Come on, now, I don’t have all night.”

“Likewise.” They laugh.

 

"But anyways, about those tour guides."

 

"...If you say so."
I push mine aside as well.

 

"Well, for starters, how do they work with darkness?" I ask.

 

“Darkness is the absence of light, so you can just create voids that pull in light at FTL speeds. You can do the same in reverse, but it requires more magic and has a tendency to make shadows.”

Al blinks.
“Too drunk for this. Anyhow...”
He turns over the three cards in the middle of the table; king of hearts, six of diamonds, jack of diamonds.

"So, what do you do for work?"

 

“I’m night shift in the bakery you smell like you just came out of.”

 

"You don't seem very drunk."

 

"Hm, alright. So, what's the current status of Virei'tus?" I ask.

 

"Is it a fun job?"

 

“I’m talking more than a few words at a time, am I not?”

“I don’t know if fun is the right word, but I enjoy it. Plus, free pastries is always a bonus.”

“Mind controlled, not here. Particularly obsessed with the Realm of Light. Also, my turn. Why the hell would the Hive Master’s daughter be dumb enough to duel you if it ended that quickly in your favor? Did she think she was some sort of goddess or something?”

 

"That you are."
I nod.

 

"No idea." I shrug.

 

"Free food is always nice."

 

"Considering you're rather sadistic, did she beg at the end or no? And yes, after this, the rest of the questions are yours."

"Especially when you just took them out of the oven. Everything's better warm, if you ask me."

"Then I'm wasted."
