Void Rift (rp) - Intermission

I scratch and X on the coin then flip it, and it lands on the table.
It lands on the flat side.

 

It's back in place, the mace resting on it again.


"Was he a bad king?"


It's hard, but you can get the blade in the ground.

"Hmm... maybe you could ask the tour guides. They get around more than we do."

You're dealt pocket twos, spades and diamonds.

The first three down are a king of hearts, ace of clubs, and eight of hearts.

 

I casually slouch a bit.

 

Shadow Stephanie thinks for a bit, before whispering through the grate.

"Heeeeelp meeeee." Shadow Stephanie whispers.


"No, not really. His laws were strict, but they were to protect us." Iz says.


I try breaking through the ground as much as possible.

 

The mace moves.
"The hell?"
"Okay, it wasn't just me..."
"No shit. Go prep the cage, I'll find the straggler."
She hears one set of footsteps walk away.


"I take it then he wasn't particularly popular?"


You keep digging down until you hit the bottom of the arena's sphere.

The others join you in the position after a few uneventful hands and a drink.

 

"OooooOOOOooooOOOooooh!" Shadow Stephanie moans in a ghostly voice, before getting out of sight.


"Oh, no, he was well liked. Crime was very low since most lawbreakers were rounded up swiftly." Iz says.


I try digging through the bottom of the sphere.

 

I eventually start counting cards to make it more interesting for myself.

 

"Where would I find those?"

 

He throws some sort of liquid that runs down the stone, dissolving residue on it.
The rat wastes no time slipping into a tiny crack near the top of the path.


"Then why would he be likely to be assassinated?"


You can't. There's no give whatsoever.
"Okay, mister mole, you realize that thing is far stronger than the fabric of reality?"

"Hang around the village map, one will approach you eventually."

Nobody notices, and after a few more hands and a few more drinks, everyone except you is too drunk to realize they forgot to start playing with chips.

 

He laughs.
"Ha, that's one way to do it."

 

Shadow Stephanie gets out of the way quickly.


"Happens to all the kings." Iz shrugs.


I seem to realise something, before priming Shadow Katana and trying to cut a hole in reality.

 

It fills the vents with a fog that makes her eyes water, but avoiding physical contact seems to leave her completely unharmed.


"I take it the assassin then gets killed by a shadow that's actually strong?"


You can, but you find yourself immediately reset to the surface.
"Now, now, just because you can do something doesn't mean you ever should. Perhaps I need to revoke that ability?" She says, playful demeanor entirely gone and replaced with a serious tone. "This isn't a test of how many rules you can break."

"Or, you could wait for a shift change. A lot of the guides come here."

 

"How long would I need to wait then?"

 

Shadow Stephanie wipes her eyes and tries to get a little further away.


"You have to be pretty strong to assassinate a king." Iz says.


I search through my pockets for something, annoyed, before swiftly pulling out a simple gold pocket watch with a smile. I click the pocket watch, seeming to be expecting something to happen. Nothing happens. I click it again, before furiously clicking it, looking a little panicked.

 

"So,"
I bring the subject up politely.
"care to start playing with chips?"

 

"If strength was everything, I would never have fallen."


The coyote mask turns to a growling bear, and she draws her sword.
"Test failed. Now, your long awaited duel. King of Shadows, prove yourself worthy of your weapon."
The kunai all return.

Al runs his hand across his throat as the others give you a confused look.
Seems Al's the only one who can keep down his drinks with no effect.

"Ten minutes, maybe?"

 

“Sounds good.”
I nod.

 

Iz shrugs.


Suddenly, out of seemingly nowhere, a shuriken travelling at high speed cuts across my opponent's face as I grin.

"I'd think with someone so willing to hide their identity, they'd be more clearly able to see a ruse." I say, before appearing behind her and trying to pick her up.

 

"I can wait ten minutes."

 

"Well... if you don't mind me asking, what's the difference between a shadow and... you?"


The shuriken clearly cuts through, but both her face and mask are completely intact.
Kunai cut into your hands as you reach for her.

"I was hoping you would go all-out without much convincing. This entire affair is extremely exhausting... I think."

"Well, here. Have a muffin on us while you wait, you look fairly tired anyways." He says, offering you a raspberry muffin wrapped in clear plastic.
