"Shadow Stephanie, do you want to NOT talk about EBB?" Pozel asks, grumbling.

You're out in the forest near the edge of the lake, some sort of leafy cover camoflauging where you just came out of.

"But how does a machine read a book and then make other people understand it?"

 

"Well, one way is reading it out loud, but Emerald may or may not have something else in store."

 

"Reading it out loud? You mean, writing is like a silent way to talk?"

 

"Sorta... what did you think writing was?"

 

"I don't know, it all looked like a raptor decided to smear mud around on paper to me." She shrugs.

 

"Oh. Well, yes, writing is like a way of saying something silently, but also a way of keeping words somewhere, like you keep a video on a DVD or a song or a voice on a CD."

 

"So, reading is sort of like listening, if we keep running with that analogy? And you can keep words in a book like you remember, say, a folktale?"

 

"Then what about the fact that I used to transform when I get angry? I don't think normal people can do that."

 

"Yeah, it's just this really annoying robot bee Idhaenna has." Shadow Stephanie says.

 

"Yeah. Whether it be a folktale, or a made up story, called fiction, or useful information, called non-fiction, a lot can be stored in books."

 

"Pretty much. It's her advisor, and it's got a bug in its code that makes it go insane... so instead of being careful and scanning everything with the intent of leaving it untouched, it guns anything and anyone down to dust for scanning." Pozel adds. "...It's hard not to talk about it."

"Well, that explains why there are so many books in places outside the ruin..."

Oh, that was just me taking over for you. But no, normal people can't do that.

 

"Mm-hmm."
I nod.

 

"And what about when I get weakened? Like when I get hungry. Was that also you taking over?"

 

"Sounds like an interesting enemy to fight." Eve says happily.
