"Not unless the Hive Master gets to her, and she'll be safe in your reality."

 

"Alright. I'll bring her soul half over then." I say.

 

"I'll see you soon, then."
She drops the connection.

 

I wipe my finger on the tatters of his shirt before tossing it aside and inspecting his cuts, seeing if anything was left inside.

 

So she was here...

 

"You talking about the spectral plane?"

 

A short while later, I arrive in the void palace library.

 

"Unexplained plagues seem to be the sort of work the Hive Master dabbles in. Do you believe he had a part in this?"

 

Presumably, yes. Obviously there's no way to verify that now.

"No, such blights are typical. Frequent, almost. That's why the number of underground dwellers are quadruple those of surface dwellers."

You find oddly discolored zones, Emerald's scales looking sickly colorless but she seems to be writing in various books all the same.
"One half of a crystallized Abigail for one half of a crystallized Ruby." She says, summoning a warm (broken) orange crystal.

He shakes his head, drawing three lines.

He points to the top one, then opens his eyes wide and jumps back and forth. He points to the second one, curling up and resting his head on his tail. Finally, he gets up and points to the third one, and just pretends to fall asleep where he stands, sort of falling over.

No residue left. Very clean cut.

 

I offer Ruby's broken crystal, holding it out.

 

She telekinetically swaps them.
"...You okay?"

 

"Okay.."
He looks at the lines.
"So... one is 'being awake'. Two is where we are now. And three is sleeping?"

 

"Yeah, mostly." I say, holding onto Abigail's crystal with both hands.

 

Nod, nod, shake.

He points to the second one again, faking a yawn, laying down, and acting like he's sleeping.
He then gets up, points to the third, then just falls on his face and lets out a snore.

It's a feeling you've missed for a while.
"...You gonna be able to replace the crystals on mistress' armor?"

 

"Yeah, I've ordered some to be made, they should be delivered soon." I say.

 

Emerald nods.
"...I'm surprised you didn't bring up the light pulse rifles. I'd figured that would've been the second question out of your mouth."

 

"I've had enough issues with the light realm, I don't want to create any more issues by telling them not the supply the rifles." I say.

 

"They didn't. I never stopped the research Ruby started. I don't even know who opted to jack it and pull the trigger."

 

"Huh. That's concerning." I say.

 

"I wouldn't be. I limited its power source, and it's out. I purposefully made it so I'm the only one who can recharge it."
