"This happened before, you said. What exactly happened afterwards?"

 

She looks away and nods, swallowing.
"H-he has made a lot of people angry..."

"Yeah, he's been going stir-crazy ever since there was nothing to attack. Some people are just mad, I guess."

"Last time the Ziz and the Leviathan fought, a hurricane swept over the mainland. It took out the armies of both ruined nations and destroyed most of the villages in the forest."

 

"Well, some people believe that everyone has a chance at redemption," I say, trying to comfort Petunia, "Maybe we don't need to kill him. Maybe he can learn what he did wrong, and use his extreme powers for a positive impact on the many."

 

"Can't you and all the other dragons stop them? There are a lot of you."

 

She shrugs.
"...I d-don't wanna talk about it."

"I'm not in the mood to send a bunch of us to our deaths. The winds are rough, most of us would fall out of the sky before we got close enough to attack either guardian."

 

“Bloodthirsty, probably. It’s no surprise for someone to get used to fighting.”

 

"Right, I'm sorry," I say, "You seem so different to him. What has your life been like?"

 

"Is that why all the soldiers started just attacking everyone when the respite collapsed?"

"I g-get my own room, and i-it has a few buttons by the door. D-dad makes a little replica of every p-place he controls and lets me visit it."

 

"Yeah, that seems understandable. I should probably warn Lucy and Sparky."
He holds his hand up to the sky and whistles.

 

"Oh wow, that's actually really nice of him. I guess even in the deepest evil, there is still some good." I say, smiling.

 

"A bear and an eagle?"
A sudden gust of wind drowns out your whistle.

"W-why do you all call him evil? I-I don't get it... e-everyone's just calling each other evil." She asks, seeming genuinely confused.

 

"Yes. Have you seen them?"

 

“Not quite. That’s more desperation. When something bad happens so you take the first action you think of in order to help.”

 

"Right, history is written by the victors," I say to myself, "Well, what he's doing is removing everyone's free will. He's mind controlling hundreds of innocent people, making them kill people they'd never think of killing before, even their own family in some cases. What's worse, is he's trying to control gods too. With that amount of power, he can enact it on anyone who tries to stand against him. How would you feel if you didn't control what you did anymore? What if someone forced you to kill your father, and you couldn't stop yourself from doing it? You just had to watch as your body moved to someone else's will? How would you feel if you were killed being forced to kill someone else, and you were just left dead, like you weren't cared for at all?"

 

"The Leviathan evacuated them inland when he was looking for your pack."

She seems saddened, but confused.
"D-does he really do that? I-I thought he let them go when he got rid of all the bad people..."

"How does killing each other happen to be the first thing you think will help?"

 

"So they are still on this island then?"

 

"The people he considers bad are the people who want to give people back their free will. I doubt he'd be so kind, too. If you had the power to do literally anything at all, nothing could stop you, would you give that up?" I ask.

 

“If the humans destroyed your only source of survival, would you attack and try to kill as many of them as you can, or go out starving?”

 

"Mainland, not island."

"W-who would?"

"I mean, the humans. Why'd they kill each other?"

 

"Exactly." I say.
