"'Alternate'? Who's the goddess of magic here?" Praecantatia asks, taking out what looks like a technological screen and tapping on it idly.


Caelia smiles, before warping to the portal room and assessing the portals.

 

By now, the thing has made an entire small, floating stadium for the figures to battle, watching it as the line progresses.

 

"There are many. However, here there are more... tiers of gods. High gods belong to the six primal elements, and everything else stems from their power... specific aspects like 'magic' are typically represented by lower gods, since magic has no embodiment here. However, I am one of very few mortals who hold the power of gods. I may be the closest thing you get to a higher god of magic." Emerald says, still moving things about. "Mostly, alternate simply stems from the fact you are not of this reality."


Five open, one deactivated.

...and one without a label.

Other people in line seem to have joined it, most of them tired or bored in their wait.

Half an hour later, the door's in sight.

 

The thing just keeps moving in line, the arena fights consisting of wooden figures with a large variety of metal weapons, their only goal seemingly to kill each other.

 

People eventually start placing bets on the figures, trying to cure their boredom.

 

A girl with blue hair in large pigtails appears next to Praecantatia as she puts her screen away.

"So no one person keeps magical order here?" Praecantatia asks.


Caelia inspects the unlabelled portal, curious.

 

"No." Emerald says, glancing at the girl. "Magic flows through everything. A single god of true magical order would be our reality itself."


It's identical to the others, just unlabelled. Caelia can see a forest wracked by meteors on the other side.

 

Her eyes look rather strange, much larger than Emerald would normally expect. She waves happily at Emerald.

"Your reality is founded on magic?" Praecantatia asks.


Caelia warps into the forest, glancing around.

 

"Essentially, yes." Emerald says, paying the girl little mind.
"I, however, fail to understand why you would refuse permitting Fia to truly live. Is there a consequence I fail to see?" She asks.


A quiet fort stands, but the forest otherwise seems like a dying habitat.
However, she feels watched soon after her entry.

 

Fia seems a little surprised.

"Attempting to bring Fia to life is a tougher process than it may seem, and even then she wouldn't be truly 'human'. There are a lot of processes that must be put in place to even attempt to bring Fia into this world. I'd rather keep her with me, where she's safe and can help." Praecantatia explains.

Fia sighs quietly, leaning on Praecantatia, though her holographic nature evident.

"I'm not even sure how human Fia would even be either. She can only really exist within my computer systems currently." Praecantatia adds, stroking Fia's hair gently, her hands phasing through.


Caelia turns to face whatever is watching her, confident.

 

Emerald shakes her head.
"I suppose my argument will turn irrelevant sooner or later. Now... back to my previous question; you're the visitor, so you get to choose where we start."


It's Sivius, meditation broken.
"Surprise seeing you here."

 

The thing doesn't seem to mind, eventually occasionally mixing it up, pitting three against each other, making the arena have a lava moat or other obstacles, designing the figures to have different heights or body types, or just equipping them with very strange weapons. The main concept always stays the same, though, one survives by killing the other(s).

 

Eventually, the line seems to have stopped moving... and its little arena seem to have made a crowd out of both those waiting in line and those drunk and walking out of the bar.

 

"Shit..."
It mutters, tired, then speaks up and stops making new figures while it talks.
"Hey, look, I'm still hopin' to get a drink, so unless one of you either can get one for me, or one of you knows above average golemancy, I'm afraid I have to put this on hold."
It gestures to the arena.

 

It has a few dozen volunteers to get drinks.

 

"How do you go about storing magic here?" Praecantatia asks.


"I could say the same to you." Caelia responds.

 

"In items, as for charms and such. Other than that, magic is typically contained in the body. That, of course, implies that there are many illnesses around magic use, such as Shelling Sickness - the victim's soul is forced into their outermost skim as their insides deteriorate as a result of arcane overuse."


"One of us is much farther than home than the other. Would you not expect the lost of this reality to wander about it?"

 

"That's rather horrible. In my reality, magic is too contained within the body, but has closer ties to the heart and soul. If a user is to consume all of their magic, say to revive someone who died recently, they will simply die themselves. The only sicknesses discovered are from drinking too many or opposing potions." Praecantatia explains, Fia seeming to take interest in the conversation.


"One is only ever lost should they give up hope of reaching a known location." Caelia states.

 

"Uhh, you, and you."
The thing points, clearly choosing two random people out of the sober volunteers.
"Both of you get one, and I'd prefer something bitter, but if you can't get me something like that from in there, anything works. You'll be compensated when you get back."
The thing finishes, then continues to work on the arena and the battles, finding new ways to mix it up: team battles, elements, and eventually including beast battles, featuring different materials.

 

I summon rubber gloves over my hands and teleport in front of the draconian again to punch them, this time aiming low for an uppercut.
