Void Rift (rp) - Intermission

"I have enough to retire for a few lifetimes... hell, one mage is probably enough." Alice chuckles. "Turns out royalty pay well when you serve them well."

"Didn't want to split?" He asks.

 

The thing puts its cards aside, shaking its head.

 

He turns over a nine, sliding his cards aside.
"Gonna reshuffle..."

 

"You're pretty lucky to know royalty that pay you so well." Gail says happily.

 

"Alright."
The thing looks down, messing with something in his hand.

 

"I kind of was really good at my job. I had to get a royal pardon to quit." Alice laughs.

As he reshuffles, he glances at it.
"Something wrong?"

 

"Nah, just making a way to buy down time."
It places two unfinished figures on the table.

 

"You've got a knack for a lot of things, it seems." He says, dealing it a jack and himself a four.

 

"It comes with living."
It admits, looks at its other card.

 

"Wow, you really must've worked hard." Gail says, laughing.

 

"Not so much worked hard, moreso got lucky. My first case was to look into some gang enslaving guardians and overworking them in some mine. I went dark for a couple days, followed a few leads on my own accord, and next thing you know I've helped the royal guard bust eight gangs within two weeks of being hired."

Ace.
"What, you shapeshifters ageless or something?"

 

"There are some types of shapeshifters that aren't, but so far, I am."
It says, showing the guard its cards.
"Blackjack."

 

"Wow, that's amazing," Gail says, "I did hear myths about a supposed dark sorcerer that enslaved, drained and sacrificed six extremely powerful guardians to summon a god of your kind to block out the sun so he could reign power over all living kind. It is just a myth though, I'm pretty certain we'd know if a dark sorcerer was ruling us, right?"

 

"Oh, yes, that summon is my king!" Alice laughs. "He killed that sorcerer. Not a myth. Losers don't write history, though."

"Damn." He says, sliding his cards aside and dealing it and himself a three.

 

"...What?" Gail asks, disbelieving through sheer shock.

 

The thing slides its cards aside as well, looking at his other card.

 

"I could arrange a meeting between him and you. Nothing like a primary source to learn about an event." Alice offers.

"Hit."

 

Four.
"Again?"

 

"Yep."
