"...It works."

The light lingers, slowly wearing away at it.
"If you don't mind me asking, why would you watch your comrades disintegrate, then come at me anyways?"

 

"Something wrong with it?"

 

"We must do all we can to complete our mission." The elite says, starting to strangely adapt to the light.

 

"No, but that's the thing. Nobody's ever... not tried to shorthand me before."

"Something tells me you're not really a shadow."

 

"How's it feel?"

 

"I am a Shadow." The elite says, looking for the crystal.

 

"Too good to be true, of course."

The crystal's gone. The one they're actually here for, though, is still there.
"Then I need a piece of your soul. Provide one, and if it yields what I need it to, you're going home with your crystal."

 

"Do you know what the chest plate is made of?"
I ask, curious.

 

"Take it." The elite says, standing ready.

 

The elite feels their soul tugged at, and they then try to run it through the machine.

"Metal, I would presume."

 

The machine can barely pick up anything, the soul nothing more than a representation of what a soul should be, rather than an actual soul.

 

"You don't seem like a being that's fine with a shortage of details."

 

"You're a fake." The creature accuses.

"Metal is metal. Stronger than flesh. That is all that matters."

 

"Alright."
Pause.
"Mind if I ask you some questions about this place?"

 

"Don't expect much, but no, I don't mind."

 

"Do you remember many specifics about what happened here to make it such a... wasteland?"
I start off, hesitant to say the last word.

 

"No. I am a relatively young chief... the youngest of the four, at that."

 

"Four?"

 

"There are four major tribes. Akli'il, Aral'hrah, Zarh'ghal, and Valn'lara."

 

"Are you allies with any of them?"
