Its coven.
If there was a CL, they needed to have found a killing role.
If there was a Poisoner, they need to wait at least one day for any results.
Medusa needs to be visited.
Hex Master needs to hex everyone.
Only the potion master can instantly kill.
So altogether it is very possible for coven not to get any kills night one.

I assume that you haven't played town of salem coven before.

The coven unlike the mafia don't have a character that directly visits and kills every night, until they get the necronomicon that is; whoever holds it (always coven) has their powers enhanced to kill each night. The coven usually kills before the necronomicon by having the coven leader make someone visit a stone gazing medusa. However if a role that can't visit was controlled (for an example Mayor) then they won't visit.

Also the plague bearer can't kill, it has some cool mechanics behind it. Each night they can visit a player, they will infect that person and any visitors they may get. Infected people spread the infection if they visit others as well, only the plague bearer knows who is infected. When all living players are infected plaguebearer becomes pestilence. This role can choose a target, they will kill them and anyone that visits them as well, also they have invincible defence so they must be lynched to kill.
