"You know, treasure. Gems, coins, some old weapons. They sell pretty good if you can find the right person. Thought it was odd that a bended pipe was laying amongst them."

 

"Can you describe the pipe?"

 

"A shiny pipe, not sure what metal. It's curved and it got some bits sticking out on the sides."

"I got it at home, but it's getting late."

 

Could I do some arcana or history check to see if I can understand as an artificer what this strange item is?

All you can think of is that whatever this pipe may be, it probably has something to do with something machinery related. You, working with and studying lots of them, know that it is probably ancient and probably quite valuable.
