For what it's worth, there have been a lot of arguments over item changes, for the reason that "Sure, vets might see the use, but what about newer players?"

 

I wasn't sure how to reply to this yesterday so I took a break before doing so.

I wish you used other term other than veteran, because I'm not sure if you mean [vet] as a rank, or veterans as people who have been here for a couple of years. I think it's the latter. I also wish you used some sort of an example which would show how veterans don't communicate with new players just because of the time stamp.

Also, what do you mean by people represented on forums? People that aren't on forums at all or not known on forums? I can address both I suppose.

As an IM member, I am not sure how to exactly communicate with people outside of the forums. I do join a game here and there to ask people how they feel about changes and/or try to answer questions they have, but it's not very effective. Minecraft chat isn't a place to collect feedback, especially considering how easy it is to miss discussions and get spammed. Not to mention, people tend to be biased and exaggerate over certain things. It's easier to collect feedback on forums since I can take my time, read complete thoughts, not just pieces of them and break it down if necessary.

If you are talking about people that haven't been on forums for long, then I'm not sure if I can agree to that. I know item team has never devalued anyone's opinion based on their join date or number of likes/posts. We read everything regarding items and game balancing and try to respond. If we don't, it's certainly not because the person is "unknown".

I'm all for surveys and feedback documents. We even created a few just to check how people feel about it. The issue is, and we experienced it, people tend to be biased, nonobjective and exaggerate in their feedback. Not to mention the amount of spam feedback we received and how it wasted our time.

How do you propose we interact with new players bar forums? I can't just join random servers and search for them. Also, a chance for a what?
For them to voice their opinion and take it seriously? They can always state what they mean, and I will always be behind that and encourage it, but us taking it seriously depends on their approach on presenting their opinion, not the time stamp. If they are biased and show general lack of knowledge, then we can't do much with that.

 

Sometimes the best plants comes from a seed that grew in the wild. Not all new players want to be helped, and those who always ask for help can also take it too far as well (and blatantly, annoying), giving "veterans" this expression of "not wanting to help other new people".

And I have helped out with some ??? quests before, and holy smokes, there were some really nice people, and some really ass people.

It is natural for people to help others that they deeply trust and know, they feel safe, they feel unforced, really, it is human nature which is biased. As an example, my school had this one event to shave your head for a charity which had a very good cause. When they see their friends who are participating it, they cheer for their name; but when it is just another unknown kid, somewhat new, not that popular, it was given more of a "meh" expression. In the end, not every player wants to be deeply engrossed or addicted to a certain game, community or server, so we can't help out too much about it. Some just want to enjoy this server they found that is unique and pretty cool. Think about the other minecraft servers which you joined in but you haven't taken part in the community that much. You don't feel a loss nor do you feel ignored (sometimes you want to be unknown), you just enjoy the game like always (That's how I feel when I play on other mini-games servers at least).

 

Thank you for your opinion. I want to clarify what I said in my post about surveys. All they would be is pop up to a certain percent of people when they are in a certain level range where the IT or CT think could be improved, and in chat a simple 1-5 survey asking how fun/engaging this area is, where they just click the number and that’s it. Simple things like this can go a long way to helping to make all areas fun.
