Though it is impossible to keep plastic clean since it’s also used in food packaging. To quote the article above, “Recycling plastic today is a mechanical process. It is sorted by colour, shredded, cleaned, and melted. But this is limited to only certain types of plastics: PET, used in water bottles, and HDPE, used in milk jugs. The five other types of commonly used plastics usually contain colourants and plasticisers that mean they cannot be recycled. Adding to this is that most plastics thrown away are covered in food and grease and so are automatically rejected by markets with strict quality standards.”

We also don’t have a good way to clean up the existing plastic, especially with microplastics.

 

Israel has different trash cans for different kinds of trash so the plastic isn't dirty, multi use bags are pretty common here and you get payed when you return a bottle.
as to the existing plastic there are microbes being developed that can eat plastic.

 

I think the video mentioned how reusable bags aren’t that better either. It was something along the lines of, “You would have to use your reusable cotton bag 7100 times before it would have a lower impact on the environment than the plastic bag.” So do you guys recycle the other five most common used plastics then?

The article also mentioned that too. “In 2015, Yao and Wang, while they were still at college, founded BioCellection. The startup was based on their discovery of a bacteria that has evolved to eat plastic. But, it did not take long to realise that the bacteria would always prefer to eat whatever food contamination was on the plastic surface, and when it did eat the plastic, the speed at which it could digest it was far too slow... The other issue is too much of the work today in this space, like others who are looking at bacteria to break down plastic, is too slow and too theoretical. ‘They're only able to break down less than a couple milligrams over 24 hours. They're using polyethylene strips from a plastic bag that are completely clean,’ she says. ‘City trash is not clean.’”

Her new method could solve the problem of contamination though.

 

we separate trash into trash, organic trash, glass, plastic bottles and containers (cans and other plastics. that way everything is clean and the factory deals with it.
