Chain lightning I've seen throw itself out over 15 blocks away. Even Meteor hasn't got that kind of AOE. Also, Smoke Bomb has a 1.5-2 block range away from where each bomb lands. That's not really very big. Plus, powder specials need no mana, and by that definition I could just use an offensive spell instead of something like Quake and get an equivalent result. Just because there's more than one way to do something doesn't mean one way is any less valid.

 

your forgetting the actual range of the spell itself. Quake is extremely helpful when ur getting swarmed/ in a sticky situation. theres nothing you could compare it to in terms of useability in a tight situation besides maybe spin attack. It also does a very high amount of damage. Chain lighting just isnt that useful. Sure i suppose if you build a ls/ms thunder/earth poison build like you u suggested then it has a meaningful purpose but at the end of the day its a thunder powder special. People put thunder powders on thunder oriented weapons: lightning edge, cata, az etc. These thunder weapons gain no benefit from the use of chain lightning for the most part even though its the so called thunder special. Sure its all well and good if u use a very specific poison ms/ls high base damage build but for actual thunder builds its pure trash. Also the pve useability of poison is questionable at best and chain lightning does nothing in pvp. I like many other just dont believe that its useful and as pointed out there are many valid reasons why

 

Chain Lightning also works in a swarm situation and also does high damage. And what about the build I showed in the screenshot? Didn't focus on any of those and still dealt that much damage. In addition, many items with thunder damage aren't necessarily quick speed. Look at something like Stricken Bolt or in this case Magnus. There's also items like Crossroad Killer. The issue isn't necessarily that it isn't useful, but rather that people are using it wrong. You're heavily encouraged to go dual-element; and as Salted said once,

 

I do 2-5k with the corrupted Witherhead's bow. Not as much as the spells, sure, but much cheaper and DEFINITELY stronger than melee

As an aside, I'm pretty sure the damage boost for wind prison is either broken or doesn't work with spells.

 

Can you add the effects of armor powder specials?

on thunder t6 is says +5 - 40 thunder damage
does this mean that it wont always at +40 thunder damage onto your weapon? sorry if you explained this somewhere and I did not read it

It adds 5 damage to the minimum damage your weapon deals and 40 to the maximum damage your weapon deals.

 

@CountBurn I put 5 T6s on my Hive Dagger and the damage is 224-499 thunder damage. The spell damage actually seems higher than it displays on motoki's damage calculator and it's worth it.
