Every Minecraft account has been purchased at one point, so basically the only loss to the person is the chance of a virus.
There will always be fraudulent versions of everything, and there isn't a way to stop it, so the best thing to do is just stay away from it.

 

Could always install an adblocker like uBlock Origin. Let's you avoid all kinds of nastiness.

Ads are getting smarter, I went on a sh .st link as I had to download a program from a greedy guts, who wanted money for releaking shit. I had 3 adblockers running, adguard, adblockplus, and ublock origin. 2 ads were left unblocked which were all leading to a zero day vulnerability in flash if you clicked on that nice green download button. Just shows how smart people are getting.

 

Disabling flash is not an option? Luckily it hasn't happened me. Yet.

And those fake download buttons in the banners. Nasty stuff. Not surprised that they still exist, they really do work well.

 

Disabling and re enabling flash is a bit tedious for me, as long as you know what your doing, running an adblock, pop up blocker, anti exploit and antivirus you should be fine (and common sense of course)
