But mage can hit multiple mobs at the same time and hit them through blocks, which makes it alot easier than archer. Yes, you don't deal as much damage as archer but you can cheese most boss fights by getting them stuck and hitting them from behind walls.

 

But there are still minions and spells that can damage you and walls that can hold off bosses for more than a short moment aren't that common. Archers can just stay out of aggro-range and kill the boss without getting hit or even having to move in most cases. And the boss fights where this isn't possible (because you are in a small room) don't have walls that mages can exploit most of the time.
I've done this with both classes and while archer is just about keeping the right mouse button pressed (the only difficult fight I had to level 46 was A Sandy Scandal because of the small, plain room), mage actually has to fight and dodge attacks.
