He opens the door. Dermit is naked and chained by his ankles and wrists to the dungeon wall, his scrawny form slumped and broken. Both his legs are horribly mangled, his torso is covered in whip and burn marks, his neck is bent very far forwards about, his left hand has been cut off and his face is severely swolen and covered in blisters. The Royal Seal has been branded across his chest and carved into his right arm are the words "Traitor to the Province".
Esmé rushes up to him. "Oh my, are you - what did they-" She looks horrified.

You run for the staircase, making erratic turns and dodging everything in your path. You look back- the Dogun guard has vanished. With no time to think about this, you walk briskly in a more direct route that avoids the dragon nests, and you soon see the staircase. A guard stops you as you approach. He whispers into your ear. "The bird flies East still. We are forced to initiate our contingency. Teams have been dispatched to delay her arrival. Don't worry- you will not be moved. This is exactly where we need you."
There's a swift blow to your head and you're out cold on the ash.

 

And I thought Fyrila was bad. I gotta step up my game.

 

She nods. "I've decided to avoid reading your mind from now. I'd rather you had some privacy."

 

"Good job on an assassination attempt. Give yourself a round of applause."

I also realize that the amount of times I end up dodging the main plot are too much lol

 

He doesn't react. He starts to speak very slowly and painfully, his face barely moving. "It... was... Elimut. He... killed... Brian."
Esmé falls to her knees in front of him.
"No. He was- I mean, I know he- his own brother?"
"...yes. Togak... I... forgive me."

She laughs nervously and holds her hand out across the town. She looks up again, frightened "There's - someone hunting us. Someone very stupid but that's - that's besides the point. He's - he's working with the Dwarves."

 

"Then why did you attack togak?"

 

"Someone stupid? Working with the Dwarves? So he's not a dwarf?"

 

”Using cataclysms? Guess lava explosions are good for lava people. What’s she done?”

 

"I... Elimut suggested it. Promised... permanent position... and four thousand emeralds. I - couldn't refuse... even showed... the vault."
Esmé sits on the floor beside him. "It's not your fault. No villager can be expected to think straight when confronted with that amount of money." She looks down at her naked body and covers herself as best she can with her hands. "Sorry, I uh- I hope you don't mind. I should have expected- well, I thought - you know I never really liked you I thought I would, but this..."
"Don't worry... can barely... see. Thank you... for coming."

"No dwarf could get into this town. Have you heard of a 'Gert'? Oh no. What do we do? We can't tell anyone - they'll do something terrible, I know they will!"

Uh... what?

If Mohammed will not come to the plot, the plot shall come to Mohammed. Or something like that.

"Well, she's basically trying to colonise the entire surface - even the parts that aren't ours. There are even some in the ruins of Upper Rodoroc - it's only two years since it was a thriving Dwarven city. And there's all her talk of war."

They lead you out of the inn and to towards the gate, talking amongst themselves.
"You hear about Dermit?"
"Oh yeah, that. Who'd have thought it? He always seemed so professional."
"I imagine emeralds exchanged hands somewhere."
"But who - surely they didn't expect him to kill a man who's studied magic for thousands of years?"
"Perhaps somebody wanted Dermit out of the way... a rival at the Academy, maybe?"
"Who at the Academy has that much money?"
"You never know. Isn't some Oluxian nobleman there?"
"I didn't know that. Could it have been-"
"Careful there, Protil. You never know..."
You reach the gate of the palace, which is locked.
"Great. Now what? They didn't give us keys!"

"The main reason I came here is to piss you off, but now it just seems a bit wrong"

 

"The ceremony will start in about an hour i think they said. what exactly do you mean hunting us though, is he trying to kill us? where is he right now? maybe we could intercept him before he reaches us and the other doguns?"

 

"Huh. Not my business. Need to bring scrolls to a place faraway. Have any here? Know any scroll owner?"

 

"No - he's only after us - he's in the armoury - got in by pretending to be an ally. We leave him alone for now, but if you wee an orange-skinned creature, do try to avoid it."

"What type of scrolls? We have a library, a bit empty at the moment, but you don't look like the intellectual type."

He puts his right arm, still bleeding from the lettering, on Esmé's shoulders, blood running down her back.
"I... understand. Kalitsk... I know... you wanted Elimut to teach you... do not. He... will stop at nothing to gain... power. When... you are a threat... to him... he will dispose of you immediately... as he did... to me. ...you are his pawn. If... you could help me.. I could - I could..."
Esmé cups her hand around the stump of his left hand. "We'll help. At least I will. What do we do?"
"Find... Halster Kirt... an old friend from the... Academy. Should be... with guards... in the city. He will help."
He looks up slightly, his unrecognisably distorted face wincing.
There's a call from the other side of the door, very muffled and echoey. "Are you done in there?"

 

I yell back to the guard "not yet this is fun" and then say in a normal tone "anything else?"

 

"In short time in Rodoroc after scroll there, they screamed me be "Accomplice of scroll theft." if I find them, they can probably give me scrolls, and I can deliver scroll to ahms."

"Please - if you fail... kill me. They couldn't.. get me to talk earlier... but if they do... Elimut will know I told you... and you will be killed. Okay?"
Esmé nods solemnly and turns to you. "Glem? You'll help, won't you? I know you wanted Elimut as a teacher - I can't deny that he would be a very good one- but is it worth it?"

"Oh, teleportation scrolls? I'm afraid nobody here has any - we can't grow Gylia Reed and nobody will sell it to us. I'm sorry, but you've come to the wrong place."
