Debatable. In the words of Grian, it is considered a "far off dark land" from the perpective of the Known World (Gavel and Wynn), but should be thought of as a province.

Personally, I'd argue it is a "province" like Gavel with a portal to a realm. (The Realm of Darkness or something)

    Regardless it is still unconfirmed.

this is my theory. despite being a huge ass land, i wont think it is going to be the province itself, maybe a part, but not all, why? as stated in the wiki, dern is the most controversial province in wynn, because when you are this close to solving a mystery about it, another mystery pops up, with no evidence, no clue, it just leaves you there, confused, knowing nothing, just speculating, theorizing, and waiting. like that one time in the llevigar library, there is a book and chapter for every province, land etc. and nothing for dern, its just there, making us suspicious and confused, why were the pages ripped from the book, and who did it. thats one simple example, so the wynn team maybe is paying a lot of attention about it, they see that it is the province that everyone is interested in, so they want to make it big and fun to last for a long time without getting bored easily, like gavel, and i think 1.17 is a little gameplay update maybe, 1.18 road to dern, 1.19 fruma, 1.20 dern. so my guess is the map expansions would look a little bit of something like this:

Have you considered the idea that Dern might extend to the EAST of the Road rather than the South? In my opinion, this is far more plausible, as:

-Gateway island is accessed from Jofash Dock, on the Eastern end of the map. It probably has something to do with Dern...
-Molten Heights Portal - in the Eastern end of the map, seems rather Dern-like, it is probably linked in some way.
-Dead Island - we know it was attacked by a beast from Dern, which seems much more likely if Dern is just a short way East rather than South and across the ocean and the Wynn province.
-Sand-swept Tomb - the mummies have been a mystery for a while, as lore says they were there before the Humans. This could answer it - the Sand-swept tomb is basically a tunnel from Dern, and the things there are Dernic in origin.
-Molten Heights is full if demons - where else could those really come from?
-If Dern is big enough, the map can be square. Wouldn't that be great?

Really, the only reason I can think of for it being South instead is the Dernel Jungle, which it has been confirmed multiple times is not linked to Dern.

you missed a lot, and i mean A LOT. when leaving gateway island you arrive at the abandoned mines, which is south. the area where twains mansion is located is full with monsters, ghosts etc, because it was corrupted, by dern, which is another reason why its south, and the biggest reason why its not east is: how did the corruption happen? if you dont know, corruption happens between light and dark, light which is gavel, dark which is dern, and wynn in the middle, being affected by the corruption, since it is between light and dark, and i read somewhere that the corruption is fading away, and thats probably because of the decay in gavel, its becoming more of a dark-neutral-dark situation, so there would be no corruption effects happening. i will move on to your clues and prove you are wrong:
-gateway island isnt accessed from jofash dock, you set sail to an unknown place and direction, relend just gets you on his ship and goes to this damned island.
-yes the portal is suspicious, but you don't know, not all portals are "dernic". if you forgot the powerful elves of gavel have been living in that land for eternity, and after the dwarves fought the demon god garaheth, i assume, something happened.
-the dead island is mysterious thats for sure, but not a reason at all for dern being east.
-how is the sand-swept tomb involved in this, and how is it a tunnel to dern? and no they cant be related to dern, they are just mummies, lore doesnt have 1 line mentioning a relation between the dungeon and dern.
    - the demons come from as i assume the demonic god garaheth, a god fought by the dwarves. they defeated him, that explains the bones and fossils scattered around in the molten heights, and some mythic items have some lore about garaheth, like: inferno or ignis
    - if you want to have a square map explain to me whats the coming soon area in the map, fruma? no, fruma is near corkus, you can say behind ragni outskirts, and it was also confirmed by grian himself that the 1.18 update is road to dern, thats the coming soon area. (which is literally showing you that the abandoned mines is an entrance to dern)
in the wiki it states that dern and the dernel jungle have no relation, but who knows. that being your only reason you think dern is south, is an explanation of why you think dern is east.

(sorry for the poor quality of it, I'm not good at that sort of thing)

I was perfectly aware of all the lore you mentioned, and think this adds to it.

The 'Coming soonTM' area is the road to Dern. Dern would take a long time, as in this picture, for the map to be square as it would need to be bigger than Gavel. We agree on what the coming soon area is, this is just a different idea of where it leads. And if you remember, the route to Gateway island had land on all sides, suggesting that is went to the East, as South and Weat lead further into the ocean and the Sky Islands are to the North. It's probably a narrow, hidden, sea. This is of course speculation, but we can continue to speculate. Maybe Garaheth came to Molten Heights FROM Dern, thus starting the Dwarven war and bringing demons to Gavel. Perhaps the portal was its means of entry. We don't know, and I think if the coming soon area is indeed only the road to Dern, (possibly a Dernic colony or something, that they use to access Wynn?), I think it's far more plausible that it curves to the East. It would also explain why Fruma are so afraid of Wynn's corruption and why they closed their borders. They're the only province that doesn't border Dern, and would like to keep it safe from Dern's influence. It also explains the 'Corkus is the only place safe' from Mixed Feelings. There are wars in the parts of Gavel and Wynn that border Derna and Fruma's a totalitarian dystopia. They're worried that if they're allies with Wynn and Gavel, they'll be dragged into the war they're worried about, and that Corkus would suffer. Also, it better explains the positionsing of Qira's Hive, it being well defended against an invasion through Molten Heights, but close enough to be able to easily paricipate in the war.

if dern was actually east corruption wouldnt have struck wynn, your speculation can work but the lore doesnt approve, you miss the biggest lore in the game, which is the damn corruption. heck, we joined wynncraft to defend wynn from this shit, you making dern all the way to east kills the main reason why this game even existed.
