The answer depends on how/what you want to accomplish.
If you're looking for a Minecraft world you need to convert the worlds to .obj (object) files that you can then import into your program.
If you want to customize something and don't have much skills with building in game you could try making it in the program (which is what I do).
The other case is that you're using a reference picture or other and can't get a hold of the world, you rebuild it from the image you have.
And finally, you can use a form post compositing which is what you kind of do already. The only thing being that to make it look good is harder as you have to find the right focal length, light position, shadows, angles, and a bunch of other factors.

Converting a Minecraft world to obj is the easiest though, there are two programs that are mainly used: Mineways (built more for 3D printing), and Jmc2Obj (made to convert worlds to .obj)

If you're going to make the world in a program (which is usually easier and faster for smaller scale renders) there are two methods
    1. Using a plane and building from there
    2. Creating a block and dragging out each individual block
I used to build my scene block by block individually, but that method is very unconventional

    Method 1
    [IMG]
Make a plane, in this case it's 10 blocks so the segments will be 10 and the size will be 1,000 because each Minecraft block is universally 100cm in C4D, change values accordingly
Convert to polygon ("C" button), go into Polygon Mode, select what blocks to make 3D, press "D" (for extrude) and set to 100cm
    Method 2
    [IMG]
Yea, cubes 100cm across, no segments except for the default, and just drag them
Set the Quantizing in the Attributes Tab > Mode > Modelling > Quantize
To make sure that there aren't any gaps

For both of these methods you have to texture them manually so find the individual Minecraft textures (not the single file type), drag it onto the objects, and change the projection to Cubic and set the Length U/V to 50%
If you're going to use this method, or more specifically, method 2, you can use TumbaBit's model pack to make things easier

And then I guess the composting one, haven't done it much but here's a video that shows the same idea, you just have to apply it differently
    Yea :D
