More importantly, why do they want to murder me? Like, there's tons of powerful stuff around here, just kill it. Noooo, gotta murder some random, innocent soldier who's just quietly minding their own business and slaughtering the entire population of Detlas for the third time today because they can. Geez. Totally deserved what happened to them.

Who's them? I mean, I don't think a Obsessor would count, Lutho citizens don't look like they're strong enough, or even aware of their surroundings.
The abominations around the expanse, are well, minions, don't see why you'd want to sacrifice the minions you created, so random human it is (also imagine if the gate was already open, perhaps because that's what Bob sacrificed himself in, but it'd be a pretty stupid death)

 

That's probably why they were absolutely incompetent

Personal experience speaking, i don't mean to hurt any archer's pride:
Every single time they use arrow shield the mob ends up flying at me
Duelling is a nightamare as the second you deal any damage they run off
And most importantly:

The actual problem is why is he so tough cuz he wears no armour and shit but didn't die when Elphaba and Lucio are well-equipped

 

Elphaba got some sort of infection; Lucio got his mind overloaded, Aledar got a situation that the others most likely would've survived; and he made it out with just a broken leg. He was just smart enough to be cautious.
