That's because rural areas tend to vote republican and large population centers like cities tend to vote more democratic, so in general it will always look like republicans have more votes than they do. For example, in 2012, the map looked like this:

Anyways, Hillary DID win the popular vote, 66 million to 63 million. But because a large part of that was blue states, like California, voting overwhelmingly for her, while in red states votes were closer due in large part to low voter turnout

Well, kind of. A lot of the eastern areas are slowly dying because coal is slowly dying due to natural gas and clean energy, while the Central Valley of California, which tends to be more mixed, leaning sliiightly democratic, produces a large part of the US's food supply. Also, the Rust Belt (ohio, Michigan, etc.) tend to be swing states. However, areas like North Dakota DO produce a lot of oil.

The Popular Vote doesn't really matter in America, because of reasons that I honestly don't really know. Also, the people saying Trump won the Popular vote is based off of a claim that 3 million illegal immigrants voted for Hillary in California. This claim, however, has been repeatedly disproven. The map you're showing is an electoral map, and thus isn't based off of population density.

to be honest pretty much anything anyone does will piss off the opposite side, so most people do it anyways. This is what in large parts drives the political pendulum. And if you're suggesting they boycott or something, remember that we A. Get a lot of our energy through importing, and B. they usually can't afford losing money by doing so.

 

An electoral vote does make sense in a large country (the dividing the map part, not the letting people vote for you part)

 

However, the way America does is based off of how many members of congress each state has. Because the Senate always has two members regardless of how many people are in the state, and there must be at least 1 member of the House of Representatives, and a maximum of 435 House members (which already causes problems with equal representation), each state has a minimum of three electors. This causes people in smaller states to have more power than larger states. For example, in Wyoming, each electoral vote is worth 135 thousand people, while in California, each vote is worth 411 thousand voters.

 

Which makes sense once you think of it

 

The Electoral College is extremely undemocratic. But it was designed by the Founding Fathers to be that way, and, in a huge country like America, it's better than a popular vote

Trump is a complete idiot, he is responsible for all the shitty decisions he has made. But I just find it weird that those 63 million who voted for him are now bitching about him. They bought it on themselves. I think if the American people (I'm a Brit) had Cruz VS Sanders in the Election, everything would be a lot better.
