Been doing a little Google sheets calculating and if the Wiki is correct about material stats and 8 feedings until breeding is ready, I have a proposed list of materials to reach as high stats as for a new mount:

Trout Meat -> Trout Meat -> (In any order) Level 30 Grains, Gem, Oil, String, Wood, Paper

This in theory would result in a mount with the following stats:
    Speed - 30
    Acceleration - 30
    Altitude/Jump Height - 30
    Energy - 30
    Handling - 27
    Toughness - 16
    Boost - 27
    Training - 27

An additional Sandstone Ingot would max out Toughness if you don't want that stat to be a lot lower than the rest, although it'd be an extra 6 hours and a 1/3 of the increased stats (that would go into Energy) would a bit wasted.

The logic behind this is to get one stat as high as possible (in this case, energy) so that higher level materials can be fed. I think this goes for feeding in general, focusing on the highest limit to allow for using higher level materials.

The sheet I'm using to do these calculations is still in a very rough draft kind of state, so imma hold off on sharing it until I have it in a usable state.

Edit: I kinda forgot you have to also have to train it up that high, so it might require a bit of RNG to be able to get up to 30 energy to start applying the rest of the materials

Breeding is a lot more random than I expected. Seems like it will be more efficient to get your limits close to the max rather than all the way

Ok a bit of an addendum: I was right about it being kinda RNG. I only managed to get to 26 energy before I ran out of energy. I 100% reaffirm the "memory" of the pickups. I could literally see them repeat as I flew off in one direction. This "memory" does save across mounts, so actually, if you had another, already higher level mount to help "cycle" the pickups, you can save up like, 4 or 5 of the same pickup, and then get that one stat very high very quickly.

This feels like a lot of work so I also came up with an alternate list of materials that focuses on maximizing Training instead - less pickups for a less tight squeeze, and also uses a level 20 material in between to make the transition a little easier.

Granite Gem -> Granite Gem -> Salmon Oil -> (In any order) Level 30 Wood, Grains, Strings, Meat, Paper

In theory resulting in the following stats:
    Speed - 30
    Acceleration - 30
    Altitude/Jump Height - 30
    Energy - 28
    Handling - 25
    Toughness - 16
    Boost - 27
    Training - 30

    this is very useful

i was thinking for the later breeding levels it would be better to go more into speed at first to get that max stat so the other foods have a higher level, since training has a pretty big falloff

Ive went through and mapped out the materials and what levels give what amount of points per training stat.

I wonder what dictates the offspring characteristics, I bred a jade in the main slot and infernal in the materials slot and it still turned into a infernal. I wonder if the common colors like gold azure and red are dominant gene and the lesser seen colors like the mystic and hollow are a recessive gene?
