In my opinion this is a bad idea
I think that it needs to be one of the things that'll always stay in mods (like guns)

I just went into the snapshot and tried it- It's fun as hell to use!

you die if you fly into the ground too fast :/

I mean, this thing is amazing:

 

I'm in the bandwagon that either the Elytra has no durability, or if it has a limited durability, atleast make it so we can fly upward for a short burst.

 

But it takes too much effort and time just to be able to fly for 7 minutes

 

I didn't say 7 minutes of flight, I said short bursts. So you can actually prolong how far you can go.

 

Rage time over, I think No-Durability is a bit far. You can enchant it with Unbreaking 3, which massively increases the flight time (In testing, it wasn't always a same pattern, but it didn't lose durability for 5 secs at one time) and leather is a fairly cheap item to acquire, as well as the starting level cost not being massively high (First repair, 108.5 Durability costs 1 Level (4 Pieces of leather costing 1 Level each to full repair)). While I wouldn't mind the (Low likeliness) addition of No-Durability, it seems fairly balanced for the state of the game you'd be at. You can find various enchanted books within the City, and you can respawn the Enderdragon (when they add that) to gain around 60 Levels of XP. Really, they just need a durability boost to Diamond level, maybe 1200 (20 Minutes / 1 MC Day Base), and then it'd be a little more worthwhile.

I must admit, having to look after your wings adds a bit more value to them, though as they are now, they're only great with Unbreaking 3.

Oh yeah, mobs can wear and use Elytra too:

 

I can't see if it's wearing Elytra. More like a zombie falling in broad daylight.

 

When you respawn the dragon it doesnt give exp again. Thats 1 of the downsides i believe.

 

I think that you can only repair it a certain amount of times before it can no longer be repaired, though.

Funny to say, I just finished making a texture. Here's a resource pack I've made to go with it!

It's 32x32 (including the item), it makes the wings look like Ender Dragon wings, and renames the item to "Dragon Wings" (if you're using U.S. English).

1.9, why must you tempt me to make another pack update.

 

Step 1: Type "/effect (Your Name) minecraft:levitation 20 100" and make sure your standing on the ground.
Step 2: Wait until your high in the air and until the effect wears off.
Step 3: Look straight down and fall.
Step 4: Before you hit the ground, look up and begin flying.
Tadaa! You now fly around at SUPER FAST SPEEDS! I think there may be a limit though, since you always go at the same speed. I haven't done much testing, but this is SUPER FUN!

 

I finally just messed around with 1.9. I spent like 3 hours playing with the wings...

I couldn't even handle this...

 

What if... Wynncraft adds wings into it. Like, a new class which uses wings as it's mobility spell. Holy shit that would be amazing
