Game Mechanics Make It So We Can Buy And Sell The Same Item

If you try to buy and sell an item at the same time on the trade market (putting a sell offer up and then also a buy offer), scrap for example, the game won’t let you do that.
Why? I have no clue but I think it’s a really dumb mechanic that should be changed. Please tell me if I’m missing something really obvious.
I really dislike having to take off the scrap I’m selling on market just so I can buy a few hundred cheap pieces of scrap.
