Side note: Can I cast spells without my instrument or am I totally worthless

 

If it requires material components, you need them if you don't have the focus.

 

Well, at least I can still cast some of my cantrips

As you and Luther cross the river, you notice something. On the east side of the stream flowing from the cave mouth, a small area in the briar thickets has been hollowed out to form a lookout post or blind. Wooden planks flatten out the briars and provide room for guards to lie hidden and watch the area---including a pair of goblins lurking their right now!

Is that how it works? (send me link on mechanics of that) However, I don't think you can use a reaction to run up to them and attack, even if you prepare to do so.

Chapter 9: Combat

 

Countless times have players set up a reaction out of combat.
Most commonly "if anything attacks, I attack". This includes yourself iirc

In that case, sorry, I'm probably wrong.
I normally never set reactions, so of I did do that before I probably forgot.

 

So @H0Y0Y0Y0Y0Y0B0Y unless your ruling prohibits readying a reaction out of initiative combat, we should both be able to attack a goblin
