[info] Profile Posts Vs Forum-worthy Threads

Ok, so over the last couple of weeks there has been an overwhelming amount of random posts in this section of the forums. They usually aren't thought out very well and have very little to 0 content in them. These types of posts are classified as "Profile Posts". A Profile Post is usually something almost completely irrelevant to the topic of this section of the forums and has lackluster, not thought out statements. These types of posts constitute "Shitposting" as a regular thing and need to be stopped. A "Profile Post" thread usually looks something like this:

"Omg guys Remember when (blank) happened and everyone was so excited? yeah me too!"

"Hiya, Look at this cool item I found"

"Duuuude, I just got to level 100. This is pretty epic"

An actual thought-out thread:

"Hi, today I'm going to show you guys this feature which a lot of you don't know about (Provides facts, evidence, a guide, etc...)"

I think you guys know where I'm going with this. If you decide to make a thread in this section think to yourself, "Would this post be more fit in my profile?" "What does it add to this forum?" "Has this been posted before?" and other questions of that nature before posting. If you see a thread like this, the best thing you can do is report it or leave a comment letting them know. We need to stop these types of threads and help make a better forum. Thanks for taking the time to read this and I hope the community can work together to make a forum of actually useful posts instead of a plethora profile posts.

Leaving a comment resurfaces the thread to the top, just reporting a thread in question does both showing that such threads aren't allowed and allows the thread to sink faster.

Also another solution could be to require new forum-goers to read the rules though people could just skip similar to blindly following terms of service but it could stop some threads from clogging.

 

Everyone is just starving for anything, literally any content we can get to feed us.

Though I wouldn’t count the recently locked threads as “profile posts”...

Threads showing old items have surfaced in the past and garnered “wow” or “interesting” responses, and it wasn’t until mid 2018 where I started noticing the unexplained disregard of such threads. I’ve said it before and I’m too tired of saying this again - threads like these are appropriate threads. They’re nothing new, they have appeared on the forums for the past few years. What classifies as a “profile post” is “hey i did xxx quest”, “i found a legendary item!!” etc. Even level 100 threads don’t fall under this category, since its a huge personal achievement if its their first, and they should not feel ostracized when posting their feat.

Having the forums policed by the same people isn’t helping either. All you’re doing is making this section even more devoid of content because now people don’t even know what threads they can post without getting slapped with “I think this constitutes better as a profile post”. This is why I miss 2014-2016 forums.

 

Threads like these are overused, I’m not gonna lie and tell you we care about personal achievement threads because in all honesty we don’t. Do you have a cool item around/ or did something cool? Nice, post it on your profile I’m sure your followers would enjoy it. Having different people post the same thing over and over again isn’t boosting the content on this forum. I would much rather 1-2 productive and fascinating threads a week than 500 “hey guys y’all seen this epic text on the Wynn map, haha betcha didn’t!” Posts per day.

 

But the recently locked threads do not promote new discussion or in general do not provide usefulness to people searching the forums. Profile posts serve this purpose as letting people know a topic that is on their mind without clogging the forum and pushing useful threads down to the next page. I'm sure you would like a thread listing new content/discussion on existing mechanics than someone just asking you if you remember that something existed.

 

I don't know about @Averine , but I sure don't want a forum where every post has to be judged "worthy" by some people, based on personal tastes.
A forum is supposed to be a place of exchanges and sharing, and remember, a good chunk of this community is young or not a native english speaker. Yes, most of the posts here are usually not very interesting and can sometimes be a little redundants (no, I don't know what is the first thing I will do when 1.18 roll out), but for god sake, that's how it's supposed to be ! Let people speak of what they want ! You're not forced to read every single thread here, are you ? So why are you annoyed about those you're not interested about ?
You may think you're doing something good in trying to "clean" this place, but what you really do is being the ones that are annoying. And stop with the profils posts, seriously, who check profils posts ? I mean if it come to this, just lock the forum, and let's just all speak in our head.

Also, I'm repeating myself, but from what right can you judge posts ? If it's not insulting, spamming or total nonsense, what's the problem ?

 

im not telling you to not post what you want, I’m letting you know that there are different sections that are appropriate for different posts. In this case, short, personal threads are much more suitable to go on a profile than be in the main forum where not everyone wants to see it.

 

I'm not annoyed nor am I judging the content of the thread based on personal preference, what I want and what it seems that a good chunk of people want is less of filler threads. Because of reasons that I stated above, they push good threads below and generally lower the "quality" to newcomers when they see that the front page is full of filler threads.

I just searched for an official info about what to post in Wynncraft section and i found that you can post your stories in Wynncraft section and after thinking a little bit it seems 100% right, but what do they mean by sharing their stories isn't something like “I got to lvl 100 yessss” but they mean this “My first time to get to lvl 100, i got to see wonderful players and i found my first mythic etc. I would like to know your story.”

My point here is that it's totally fine to share your stories but you need to put effort to your threads or you can just ask the players some interesting questions that will turn to a conversation and not just stops in 10-15 comments.

Note: I'm not saying that every post that has 15 comments or lower is bad.

Another Note: I see some people saying that profile posts aren't great, but to be honest its something that you post in your achievements and your goals and some interesting facts about you, using Wynncraft section to post something just so people see your work is something i don't like in my opinion, but if it was really something interesting and unique i will happily read it.

 

Yeah, elitists have been quite annoying this past year, telling everyone to back off the forums and use their profile instead, even though only 2 or 3 people scroll all the way down on the forums to look at the New Profile Posts box.
