I personally prefer the bow clairvoyance. Much better suited for my play style, and when combined with powder, could be extremely powerful. But infinity deals more neutral damage, so I use it when taking out water resistant bosses. My skill points are set up in a way so that I can use both.

 

No it isn't, you have heal spell, which is kinda OP. Plus they got mages with 17000+ damage prior to a patch that fixed it

 

I'm a mage, I got 12k hp I do 20k with meteor, 4k with ice snake and 6k with a tp.
I can heal myself for ~4k at a time.
Mages were never harder (maybe pre gavel)
