    I'm pretty sure it's not the size but the fact that it's in the ocean (which Wynn, Gavel and Fruma say doesn't belong to any province), and that it technically belongs to the Avos (some people don't even seem to know who the Corkian humans are), and the Avos don't want to be a province.

    Dern might actually just be the Realm of Darkness itself. Considering how Gateway Island is sort of the backdoor to Dern with the portal and all.
