Leo, already waking from his nap says, eyes closed and with a yawn, “Come on, can’t we at least stop for *yaawn* to stretch and take a break.”

 

Thalia blankly stares at the scenery begore realising that there was a question and says "I have no business there so let's just keep going"

 

"I would prefer to get this… quest over with as quickly as possible."

 

Riso: “While I’d normally be inclined to stop by, we do have a job to complete. Maybe on the way back.”

 

Leo begrudgingly says, “Alright, guess we don’t stop.”

 

”Yeah, let’s just go straight to the job. It’s not so far anyways.”

 

Another hour or so passes in relative peace, without any interruptions to your travel. The sun has fully set behind the mountains, and the only light is that of the moon, the stars, and the cart.

Which is why the torchlight ahead of you is worrying. The cart stops suddenly, and a loud voice calls out, "Oi! We got a toll gate here, for anybody comin' in from Astora. Five gold a person!"

A scuffed human pokes his head into your cart, holding a scimitar. "Six of the lot in here, boss!" He catches a glimpse of Skylaar, and grins. "Oh, ten gold for the bloody high elf in 'ere! Higher toll for the rich, y'know how it is."

The driver says, confused and frustrated, "Pardon? There's never been a toll out here, and I don't believe the Lord has authorized this... station."

What do you all do?

 

Are tolls normal? (Especially of this price)
Also do I know if its authorized or not or would I have no idea.

These humans look incredibly suspicious to you. If you had to guess, they're trying to rob you under the guise of a "toll," which you're pretty sure would normally look much more official than this.

 

Are there any laws around improper tolls?
Or is it a "feel free to deal with them as you like" sort of thing

 

From what you've heard, this thing is illegal, and typically should be reported to imperial guards.

But, you're also quite a ways away from any towns, and you don't think these folks are going to let you go until they get their money.

 

Subdue then report I guess. :D

And can I force everyone into combat by whipping out my glaive? :>
(Btw, iirc RAW you can only knock someone into unconciousness using bare hands, but what about the butt of a weapons, like in the polearm master feat?)

 

So far you've counted two: the guy up front, referred to as the boss, and the one who poked his head in. You're unsure how many more there are, if there even are any more.

You could, but I'll wait for more responses before definitively starting combat.

Leo, woken up from his nap/trance, and gets a suspicious feeling from him.

Under a whisper and with a yawn, he says in the caravan, “This guy is full of shit isn’t he? Probably one of these bandits I bet.”

Then Leo will sneakily look out the caravan to see anything.
