    SHouldnt it default to the male pronoun? since, to my knowledge, that's how it is in all latin derived languages? or is that just spanish (in the kitchen it's male, like the large, impossible to exist, kitchen)

    I think so too as for example teacher ask whi didn't do his homework while there are girl students.
    But you can also use female, it's just used rarer than male

    So it's all right for English to have homophones but no French?
