FEATURED WYNNCRAFTIAN Season 6, Episode 3: Druser (Suggested by @Bart (MC)) Hosted by @colin350 Howdy! I am your lovely host named Colin and as promised I am delivering to you all the monthly episode of Featured Wynncraftian! If you're new, you might be asking yourself, what the flippity heck is Featured Wynncraftian?? Featured Wynncraftian is a monthly forum series where we feature people from the community! You do not have to be the most popular member to get featured. Like past seasons, if you think you know someone who would be a good interviewee or is just freaking awesome, feel free to suggest them here. @Druser truly amazes me with their knowledge of Wynncraft's complex item system. Furthermore, they have quite the "guide" resume. With out further ado, lets get into the interview! Lets talk about what seems to be one of your passion areas: class building 101. What got you into class building to begin with and what inspires you to keep at it? Mine is probably a bit of an atypical story. I pretty much just decided "class building seems interesting, I want to get good at this", and then I applied experience getting good at things to class building. There's a lot of depth to Wynncraft's item system, which makes it quite interesting to experiment with. ________________________________ For the readers who aren’t too keen on the item system, what’s one feature of the item system that has produced “interesting” results? Wow, picking one feature is really tough. I'll go with the interaction of varying player skill level with hybrid builds, where building well requires balancing spell and melee damage with attack speed, stealing efficiency, and secondary spell effects. ________________________________ By hybrid builds do you mean multiple elements or different identifications? I am a bit of a noob when it comes to build making haha By hybrid I mean a combination of melee and spell. Hybrid can (and usually is) subdivided further, primarily into spellsteal and fast hybrid, but for the topic I was referring to there, the different types of hybrid builds are best considered together. ________________________________ That makes sense! How often do you experiment with new builds? When you get a new item? Or when item changes are released? Or do players request builds from you? Usually during item changes and when we get new items I'll narrow down the list to what has a reasonable chance of being competitive, and experiment with those to see how they are in practice. Once in a while though I just have random inspiration for a concept and get an urge to try it out. ________________________________ What’s a build you’re proud of? Hm. Probably my most famous build is the Aphotic-Ex Nihilo Water Hive Bow build (it looked something like this, though it had worse elemental defenses at the time), which was one of the first to bring the "elemental defenses don't matter" theme/meme to prominence. However, my personal favorite is probably this Nullification build. ________________________________ The knowledge you have in build making amazes me :). Now it goes without saying that I can’t just ask you about class builds for this interview. What inspired you to help new players with guides? For my more general audience guides, I started doing those because I thought there were significant gaps in class building introductory guides that really needed to be patched, and I thought I could fill them well. A lot of class building knowledge is accumulated through experience and tinkering, and while those are definitely the best way to get good, it's also nice to have primers for newcomers getting into it. ________________________________ Is there a particular reason why the forums are good for guides? Or would the wiki be better? A wiki necessitates a greater degree of impartiality. Enough of class building is subjective enough that putting it on a wiki as the direct text wouldn't really fit. For example, though the divisions of the basic build types I chose for my Class Building 101 guide are the ones I believe to be most useful in approaching various types of builds, other people would (and often do) certainly choose different divisions. Generally I've found that wikis are better suited for organization of less easily automated but generally objective information - things like documentation of quests, discoveries, and the like - whereas something like items works better on a specialized site like wynndata, while much of class building is better told through individual voices. That said, some aspects of the item system that are relevant to class building probably should go on the wiki (e.g. motoki's damage calculation findings). For those, it's just inertia - the wiki has historically not been great in those areas so the task often feels daunting to anyone considering it. ________________________________ That makes a lot of sense! Do you think a guides section of the forums would help with outreach? A lot of outreach nowadays is dependent on bumping threads. That's a good question. It's possible, but I don't see it going any differently than existing sections personally. ________________________________ Thought I’d ask for your input because you seem pretty knowledgeable :). Well that’s all the time we have! Thank you for such a great interview!! Thank you for having me! ________________________________ If you want to read some of the past interviews from the last few years, click here Unlike past Featured Wynncraftian seasons, I hope to interview someone(s) each month! See y'all in November! Thank you again @Druser for letting me interview you!
