Yeah, I figured you would pretend. This is where it becomes important for the others to separate player knowledge from character knowledge.

Suddenly, in the middle of your conversation, a large howl roars from the west side of the town, coming from the forest at it's edges.

The howl is cold, dry, lost. Not like a typical wolf cry. Then it comes back, but not a howl. A cackle, like a hyena. But still not normal. Almost... dead...

 

Yevor: "Wh-what was that?!?"
*I draw my sword.*

 

The leaves shake as something moves through the bushes... It looks like a gnoll (hyena-person), but skeletal. It holds a club with razor-sharp metal blades sticking out...

It snarls at all four of you...

Each one of you needs to roll a d20 and then add your initiative (dex) modifier.

We go in order of highest to lowest.

The gnoll withering rolled an 18

 

Rolled a 14, dex modifier makes it 16.

Just got home btw. A polar vortex just hit, my body temperature drops 5 degrees from going outside.

 

5 + 2 = 7
(2 is my initiative modifier, btw)

 

So far its:

1) Gnoll Withering
2) Keylas
3) Yevor
